Heaven forbid that it should ever come to that ! Can you imagine the mayhem - it's almost as bad as governments holding referendums.

As Churchill said, “The best argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter.â€

Re: Polishing

Bomber Nicholson solemnly putting allegation that we had had "as much as three pints". An invitation to lie and grossly understate consumption which was readily accepted. As your partner in crime (although not as ill as you were afterwards I seem to remember) our punishment was to be barr...

Yes they were pretty disgusting. They only seemed to be cleaned for days when there would be lots of visitors around: Parents Day, Speech Day etc. You obviously never ventured into the ladies side ! They had doors and were much cleaner - very sexist ! In those days the ladies were hardly ever freque...

Re: Master Keys

Didn't you manage to get an 'official' one after the amnesty? I did but it was not nearly as good as the one I handed in (new = weak metal as oposed to old = V Strong metal!) Andrew Yes, I got one because of my work in the Theatre. There were a few days however when I was without one and that was a...

Regarding the settles - we didn't have those in my day in Leigh Hunt, but what you describe rings a bell - sure I saw them around somewhere at CH in my day. You wouldn't have had them in Leigh Hunt as LHA&B never had them. When these houses were converted from "Prep" they put wooden c...

Anyone need a camper van in New Zealand this summer ?

If anyone is travelling to New Zealand this summer then you might be considering buying a camper van. This is a great way to see this fantastic country. My son is there at the moment and will be selling the van that him and his mate have spent six months travelling around in. The van will be availab...

Master Keys

Does CH still have the same old master key system ? It got you through most locked doors around the school. It was so useful to have a master key although you didn't want to get caught with one. There were so many of them around however, some even home made from soap impressions. At one time the hea...

We still had matron inspections twice a week and "D"s in the seventies. By then however, three "D"s only meant you were put on nightly inspection for a week. It seemed as though we were always being "cracked" (slippered) in the Junior houses. You knew what the risks wer...

Never mind coats . . . . In my first year in LHA, 1973, we woke up on the last day of the summer term to find that all our breeches had gone. The contents of the pockets had been neatly left in a pile on our bedside cupboards (we had cupboards, not settles, in Leigh hunt). Whilst we were all panicki...

By the way - James, if you're reading this, I bumped into your old housemaster at the Bax last Sunday, looking very dapper. I recall that, for us lot next door in Mid.B, he always seemed to run your house like some sort of prison camp and we always thought he was a bit of a sh1t, but, having seen h...

I very much support what Richard Ruck has said. We may live, today, in a society of over protective political correctness but back in the seventies, when Richard and I were at CH, it was very different and not necessarily worse - just different. What we considered to be learning to stand up for ours...

I've just had a quick look at your website, JamesF35, genuinely nice site with some lovely properties. It looks like you have a Good Hand in your business. Thank you. The Mayor assures us that Bonnemain is derived from ancient Breton for Bushes & Stones and has nothing at all to do with the han...

I'm not sure I would have chosen the word "scummy" to describe the UK but, when you live abroad, you certainly become much more aware of what is wrong about UK society. It's a bit like my school reports really: "UK could do much better if it applied itself"

marching . . . . . what great memories !!! I've never lost that ear for the stong beat and the left foot down at the same time. Marching into lunch and marching through London on St Matthew's Day parade (every year as I was in the choir). It makes me proud just to think of it. In 1973 the whole scho...

Accommodation at Swansea

Hi Hendrik, My son is going to Swansea this September to read geography if he ever comes back from his 6 month gap year trip to New Zealand !. Whilst he is away, we have to sort out his application for accommodation. Do you have any suggestions as to which hall is best for a fresher ? As he has an u...
