Re: Desks
Deaconess Ridsdale (I don't remember any nickname) used to preface many remarks with "In Damascus.." pronounced with a long aah in the middle, which we all imitated.

Re: Desks
We all rose from the desks with the Form captain's signal and politely chorused "Good Morning, Miss So-and-So" - then remained standing silently until invited to sit. The first time I supervised a junior form's prep, they went through this routine. I sat down and started my own prep. When...

Re: Quick questions and (maybe) answers Hertford Memories thread
I thought our conduct marks were for sitting on the fire escape watching fireworks, so it must have been 5th November, or thereabouts. I don't remember having any indoor fireworks, let alone throwing them.

Re: A View from the Red House
Mary, I wonder whether Applied Maths classes ever went very well. We were a set of 2 all the time, with a new teacher who had no idea how to approach teaching the pair of us. I remember lots of questions in Quadling & Ramsay (did you have that book?) on pile drivers. I had no idea what was mean...

Re: A View from the Red House
I think I remember Miss Stokes. If I'm thinking of the right person, then she taught me Applied Maths in the 6th form. I was too young (or immature) to get to know her as a person rather than just a teacher, but she seemed a kind, gentle woman. We started as a small set of 3, but by the end it was j...

H'm - I'm wary of risking losing 300 years of family history! You're making me nervous - back up the family history immediately! Then check that you can read the backup. I like to back up to a CD or DVD so it is quite separate from the actual computer. If your hard disk should fail then the recover...

Re: FIRST LEAVE WEEKEND
I'm sure you weren't unfeeling Katharine. I wonder if it was easier for you because you had no real alternative to boarding for your children. Also, they were so young that you probably couldn't involve them in the decision, or discuss it much with them. You had to emphasis the positives, for their ...

Re: YOU MUST SEE THIS!
I do remember a whole school outing to Westminster Abbey somewhere around 1966 for its 900th anniversary. Sadly, the major thing that has stuck in my mind about this outing is the typically military precision of the arrangements for toilets - we were allowed to use St Matthew's primary school which...

Frances,if your old computers will connect to the internet then could you email the files to yourself? Or if they are modern enough to have USB ports you could use a memory stick. It is often possible to take a disk out of a computer and connect it temporarily to the new computer, but that takes con...
