SIR BARNES WALLIS

Old Blues interested in Sir Barnes Wallis and his achievements may like to know that there is a long and very informative article in the May issue of Aeroplane magazine concerning his Vickers Windsor bomber. This was the largest - and last - of the designs to use his geodesic construction method. It...

Re: Amelia White (in the Daily Mail) deplores her CH years

There are some comments above on the poor quality of food at Horsham in the 1970s. All I can say is that the writers never had to endure my late mother's cooking - Housie was a relative feast in comparison.

Re: Favourite story from your time?

Leo, Sad to see you have not received any replies, so here goes...! My greatest single memory is of a very particular Chemistry lesson. The teacher was Mr Bevan (known as 'Pop') who was a dry old stick - he would have been just the man for the teacher in the film 'Goodbye Mr Chips.' He was always sl...

TALES FROM SHAKESPEARE

While watching the film 'Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society' I noted that one of the key elements in the story was the book 'Tales from Shakespeare' by Charles and Mary Lamb.To my embarassment I had never heard of this book, even though I am an Old Blue and was in Lamb B! I now have a copy an...

Dear Conal,
I am reluctant to spoil your research, but I have already covered this event in considerable depth. If you ask the Museum they have a copy of my research paper.
Cheers,

SIR BARNES WALLIS

A new book has just been published: "Dam Buster: Barnes Wallis: An Engineer's Life," by Richard Morris, Weidenfeld & Nicholson, London; £24.99. I hope it does the great man justice and that it highlights both what CH did for him and what he did for CH. My favourite BNW story concerns m...

"To ensure the students' safety the security team will get a notification if students leave their dorms out of hours…"
Good grief - such a system would never have stopped pinging in the 1950s!

Re: CH role in Coronation

Katharine, The one definite role of CH with a new monarch is that on the latter entering the City of London for the first time the Senior Grecian presents a loyal address. If I remember correctly this is done on the steps of St Paul's. On the late queen's entry the SG was flanked by the Head Girl, t...

Re: New daily maths puzzle - give it a go and share?

Julian,
Had a look. I don't understand the rules, let alone find the answers, but maths was NEVER my strong point. Sorry!
I have a nephew who is a brilliant mathematician so I will ask him what he thinks.

What a find! As a matter of interest, the Inspecting Officer of the CCF on 3 Jun - ACM Constantine - was an Old Blue! Must have been quite an occasion.

Re: Midwich Cuckoos - episode 3 - is this a Housey Girl or Boy?

I thought that the hairstyle looked a bit modern and the 'child' looked a bit old. The sculptor was born in 1939 so this is clearly a modern work. It is absolutely correct that there was a CH outstation in Ware and there is nothing wrong in having a statue to commemorate that fact, but a younger sit...

Julian,
Hi - I am still here!
It is definitely NOT a CH girl. Girls wore a very different uniform from the boys until 1985; i.e., on the 'merger.'

Re: Punishment system

I can endorse that. In (about) 1952-3 someone two senior to me on the house roll, who had been in trouble on several occasions, simply disappeared, together with all his belongings. There was no public announcement. We were told quietly that he had been expelled and not to discuss him any further - ...
