Re: The Hertford Dining Hall Clock (1879-1985)
It's nice to know that one of the antiques that littered the Hertford School and went largely unappreciated by us lot ( well, by me anyway ! ) has found such a loving and caring home. "Time" was carefully measured out at Hertford. Everything had its time and was normally on time. The days ...

Kerren Simmond's Memorial Service
I posted the following on the CH Ladies Facebook group: Alexandra Thrift 5:15pm Oct 17 I have just got back from the Memorial Service for Kerren Simmonds in the chapel at Chichester University. A lovely sunny day and the light streamed in through the huge modern stained glass window, mottling everyt...

Re: Kerren Simmonds is in hospital
Sadly, due to work commitments ( End of Term Test Day ) I am unable to make Kerren's service on Friday. I feel sad even having to write this about Kerren, who was always so studious and caring in marking the passing of other OBs on this forum. I remember agreeing with her that it would be nice to si...

Re: Kerren Simmonds is in hospital
I am very sad to hear of Kerren's passing. She was one of the kindest and cleverest of OGs. She helped to look after D.R. in her last years and kept us all informed. I remember her at C.H. although I was very young but I remember her best from the Hertford CHOGA reunions where I walked her " go...

Hi Suzanna,
I fear that that Mary Jane could have been Mary Lyon ( ?) . Do you think ? I was hovering here ( on the forum ) because I was so sad to hear of Kerren Simmonds passing and saw your post. I will try to phone you soon.xxx

Re: Gravel Crunching
Betty Jukes taught science to the 3rd form , I think. Messing about with bunsen burners and trying to put a metal ball through a ring before and after it had been heated and using words like "expand" and "contract" . Then drawing a picture of said experiment. Thwilling stuff !

Re: Gravel Crunching
DR writes about the change from gravel to tarmac in her autobiography. She gave the large machines that did the work pet names that were apparently used by the school at the time. Possibly Sir Harry Vanderpant paid for that work too .( would need to check the book.)

Re: Does CH Take In a Fixed Quota of Ginger Kids Each Year?
Alex, do you remember when we visited Horsham, we went hunting for the bust of Sir Harry Vanderpant? We found him on the landing of a twisty back staircase that led to some unknown region that led to nowhere. (It was a bit Gormenghastian.) His surface was cracking up. Completely neglected! The spla...

Re: What Were You Useless At?
I was useless at hitting balls....be it with any kind of bat ( rounders, cricket) , raquet ( tennis, badminton, squash ),stick ( hockey )....but, mysteriously and inexplicably, I was good at table-tennis. It broke my heart that I wasn't good at sport ( I couldn't run fast either) and I kept trying i...

Re: Does CH Take In a Fixed Quota of Ginger Kids Each Year?
It wasn't Barnes Wallis who had a " thing" for ginger kids, as mentioned by Angela ( heaven forfend ! ) but it was the very generous donation governor who also had a " thing" for Dorothy Ruth West ( Headmistress at Hertford ) and his name was Sir Harry Vanderpant ...I think his b...

Re: School Prospectus
I haven't visited the unofficial forum for a while and just came by to thank everybody at the school for the lovely Sunday Half Hour tonight...and saw that there is a prospectus thread. I thought it ( Prospectus ) was fairly horrible and didn't really describe the ethos of the school as I understood...

Re: Death of Nigel Farrell
I was surprised that he wasn't mentioned at the BAFTA awards when they list " those that are no longer with us and sadly missed". Unless I blinked and missed it. I loved his programmes...warm, intimate and friendly.

Sunday Half-Hour BBC2 15th July 2012
I had the radio on purely by chance as I cooked tea....and it featured...well...Christ's Hospital,Horsham :D It was very lovely and brought tears to my eyes, especially as some of the Hymns were my favourites. I recommend anyone interested ,who missed it, to use the BBC Listen Again website. I was a...
