David Taplin (1939-2022)
I have belatedly learned of the death of Professor David Taplin (CH 1950-57). He was an engineer and professor who worked and taught in various countries around the world, before ultimately settling and retiring in Vancouver. Our paths crossed professionally about 20 years ago and we stayed in touch...

Company was run by the Silletts, to save googling.

Re: Amelia White (in the Daily Mail) deplores her CH years
I was surprised by her calling it Christ’s , is that common usage? I would have expected CH or the full name. Of course the change may have been made by the paper. I have heard this on several occasions, but not by current or former pupils or staff themselves. I've heard it said by people who are s...

Re: Amelia White (in the Daily Mail) deplores her CH years
That's pretty much what I remember living in. Don't know if it was proper wood or dry wall. At the time I never thought about build quality because anything was better than open dorms, but I remember how the walls would bend when you climbed up them by putting your feet on one wall and pressing you...

Re: Amelia White (in the Daily Mail) deplores her CH years
I just came across it this morning. Sad reading. It seems that she has written a book about the negative effects of boarding schools in general, not specifically slamming CH but more the whole idea of living away from home as a child. I don't blame her as it was clearly a life-defining experience fo...

Re: John Ditcham
I remember him, although he never taught me. JGD if I recall? There seems to have been a John Geoffrey Ditcham teaching English and French at Schule Marienau in northern Germany in the 00s. Companies House has him, as of November 2022, as a board member of a Bath-based sports education company. He i...

Re: Brexit
Also, some countries insist, or even legally require (like the US and Canada), that dual nationals of their country and another country, enter the country using the passport from that country and not their other passport. The UK and most European countries have no such rule. I'm fairly sure they do...

Re: Brexit
When I worked in Argentina, our International Security Advisor would make occasional visits. He had been born in Argentina, but travelled on a British Passport and had been in the UK military. He was always given grief at the airport, so to avoid this he would travel to Montevideo and come over on ...

Re: Brexit
My grandson was born in County Mayo, but my son was told he was not entitled to get an Irish passport as neither of his parents were Irish. I gather he was born in or after 2005 then? Because anyone born on the island of Ireland before 2005 is automatically entitled to Irish citizenship. Ireland wa...

Re: Brexit
So is the advice for those of us who do have UK and Irish passports to leave UK showing a UK passport and arrive in EU/Schengen with an Irish passport? Yes, definitely. The UK doesn't have departure passport control like the Schengen area does, so it's not really an issue for leaving. But arriving ...

Re: Brexit
Reading your post again, reminded me of what happened in august of last year. I was travelling from Sweden to Heathrow, I have three passports Swedish Irish and UK. I made the mistake of showing my UK passport at the passport control on my way out. Nowadays I think that passport are stamped so that...

Please be rest assured that the CPO involved in the Karim trial etc. will be made aware of the statement as will others who attempted to ensure that action was not taken against perpetrators and this from the entire period of 1969 - 2001. Action on this has already been undertaken. Rob Thanks a lot...
