Re: Expelled

Tom(?), I think, and while I remember their names I don't think I'd be able to pick them out of a line up. I'm more surprised at not remembering an event as big as a barn burning rather than wanting to know who was involved. As scrappy as some of my memories about my time at CH are, I'd have expecte...

Re: Expelled

Given the dates (and house) I really should remember that event, but for some reason I'm drawing a blank.
If I think real hard it kinda rings a bell and there were a couple of kids who left early when I was in ThB, but the details escape me.

Re: Expelled

Would this be a case of the really bright students being retained for staff/school excellence figures and the ' also rans ' being disposed of? Not exactly. Actually the opposite in a few cases. The couple who were bounced for probably having sex were ones who had "very bright futures". I ...

Re: Expelled

I remember a few people getting expelled and many more getting rusticated. I only vaguely remember Poulton's "dry old stick" talk, but I do remember a couple who got expelled, not for being caught in the act, but for the lady getting caught/seen leaving the guy's room. As I remember it, a ...

Re: Dobbie's departure

Shrewsbury's salary scale was above CH - and likely to continue on a more vertical trend as CH financial troubles mounted , feeding in to a better retirement income. I've heard this mentioned vaguely a few times before, but don't know much about it. As I understand it between the late '90s and earl...

Re: Letter to the Head Master

Just some thoughts on your post; Reid has become the focus of a baying pack on here. I'd say that Sillett, Poulton and Cairncross are the ones in focus, Reid is left with dealing with their legacy and as the current head is naturally a focal point for comment, information and explanation on the matt...

Re: Karim's sentence hearing

I'd expect (hope for) more publicity after Dobbie's sentencing is handed down, especially if/when more is publicly made of the fact that Reverend Dobbie was a chaplain in the Chichester diocese who hosted Bishop Ball during his numerous visits to the school over the years.

Re: It's time for Sillett, Cairncross and Poulton to comment.

Pull up the lectern in big school, issue an invite to old blues who wish to attend and let them explain their actions and inactions. They'd need a bigger space. They'd also need to accept that they have something to answer for. I might be an optimist (of sorts), but even I've got my limits. The way...

Re: Did monitors have any real use?

The fagging system is quite similar to the "prison bitch" system. Once you strip away all the pretentious layers of "culture" and "tradition", you realize there isn't much difference, it's all mindless and brutal protection rackets and petty psychological tricks. I was...

Re: Will Dobbie be defrocked?

I don't think the CoE do defrocking anymore, that's why Bishop Ball is still Bishop Ball. They can suspend him from functioning (working) as a priest, but can't divest him of the title or position.
Kinda like the BMA, they can strike a doc off, but can't strip them of the qualifications.

Re: LinkedIn profiles

They're not taken too seriously in my line of work, but they are checked along with a cursory google search and any other publicly accessible social media platforms. What with research being peripatetic and institutions cancelling email accounts as soon as your contract ends it's handy for keeping t...

Re: Did monitors have any real use?

But do remember hoping I'd be selected for at least being a school monitor, as a recognition of achievement amongst my peers - but clearly I was rubbish! I remember the time on my deps when the monitors/house captains/etc were to be announced, most of the boys in my house were actively hoping they ...

Re: Did monitors have any real use?

I have no memory of what the school monitors could actually do  Tell kids to pull up their socks, button their coats, and not walk on the Grecians path is about all I can think of. In the senior house there was a house captain and vice-captain who must have had some important role to play, but ...

Re: Explanation of the 'Tube'

I hope intrepid pupils are able to bypass whatever heightened security measures are in place and explore the tube. I was a lurker beneath, it was one of my favorite sanctuaries along with walks in Shelley's wood. Finding the Little Side tunnel and getting all the way from my house to emerge out of ...

Re: What was the food chain?

Sexual abuse has become the sin against the Holy Ghost. Jimmy Saville is reviled. And yet the actor who played Dirty Den in Eastenders was a convicted murderer in real life, a fact that was barely mentioned when he recently died. Murder, it seems, can be forgiven, while sexual abuse cannot. I'd say...
