Does anyone take these seriously?
I deleted mine when clients started checking me out.
According to Karim's he was Head Coach at five different places in 2016:

Are people truthful in their profiles? I have come across a few who have had to explain time "out of circulation". Doesn't always make happy reading.

I’ve never had one but certainly they are encouraged these days in local government and town planning, my line of work...

They're not taken too seriously in my line of work, but they are checked along with a cursory google search and any other publicly accessible social media platforms. What with research being peripatetic and institutions cancelling email accounts as soon as your contract ends it's handy for keeping track of former colleagues but not much else.
It's rare it'll make any difference to getting hired.

I recall that CH OBs had one to try to support career choice. Seemed to be a dead end

LinkedIn is useless for me as a way of attracting work.
My clients prefer to keep their heads down. John Smith drug dealer is not clever.

A few years ago I did recruitment for my department at work; we often checked LinkedIn, though it never altered a hire/no hire decision, and no one was prejudiced for not being on it. Personally, some good clients have found me through it (I’m a translator) and I have reveived a few invitations to interview.

Yes, I can see why it wouldn't work for you, and I guess reputation amongst instructing solicitors is much more important. I don't like LinkedIn but it does work for promoting Business to Business services - I'm a business consultant specialising in teaching business owners to get their pricing strategies right, if anyone's interested. And I suppose LinkedIn is more transparent than joining the freemasons and doesn't require you to roll up your trouser leg while pledging allegiance to the great architect in the sky.
