I have just got back from the Memorial Service for Kerren Simmonds in the chapel at Chichester University. A lovely sunny day and the light streamed in through the huge
modern stained glass window, mottling everything in pastel colours.
A wonderful young University Choir ( mostly girls) sang Brahms " How Lovely Are Thy Dwellings Fair" and Faures "In Paradisum" very, very beautifully. Two of Polly Robson's sons sang a lovely duet. A Brass Ensemble and the Organ provided accompaniment. We sang the hymn: " Come Ye Thankful People Come " and the choir ended with Psalm 150.
The Vice Chancellor, visibly moved and sometimes struggling to keep his composure, spoke very sincerely of his colleague, Kerren, with whom he had worked for over 30 years, detailing an incredible list of her outstanding achievements in the field of "compliance" at the University and the enormous contribution she made to the evolution of what was originally a college, and speaking of the great affection in which she was held by both students and colleagues.
