Ah yes - on my Deps we had to do Philsophy with him for a term. It enraged me completely. I'm obviously not a thinker.

But to be fair, following that term, his comment to me on my school report was the only one from all my reports and from all my teachers that I can actualy remember. It was an interesting insight and FWIW, I think he was right - and it's been food for thought since.

I think it's things that you should already know on the net. There's a dictionary somewhere on line IIRC!

He was our house tutor in LHA in the early 80's and the bloke displayed a clock-watching obsession that was borderline autistic. If he wasn't giving us a 10 second countdown out of the dorms in the mornings he was standing at the front door to the house during the summer term counting down the 7pm bell rings as we all sprinted back in off the short grass out the front.

Such pedantry didn't make him particularly popular with us kids. He wasn't above punishing you if you were one second late for something. He was a quiet man and obviously a deep thinker so I guess the philosophy thing comes as no surprise (as he didn't teach it while I was at CH).

Mind you, he wasn't thinking too straight one Summer's evening when he thought he would join us on the short grass for a game of 'British Bulldog' wearing nothing more than a light cotton shirt and a pair of shorts. Big mistake, Sooty. As any Old Blue knows, at CH 'British Bulldog' was a barely-organised brawl. He was quick on his feet (I'll give him that) but he wasn't quick enough for 30 of us all hellbent on diving on top of him, pummelling the crap out of him and ripping the shirt off his back (whilst trying not to look like we meant to do it).

He lasted less than two minutes. Revenge for all those petty punishments was ours. I don't mind admitting it was quite cathartic. In fairness to him, he took the scragging in the spirit of the game as he limped off back to house with his clothing in tatters.

Needless to say, he declined all future invitations to play BB. Shame!
