We did NOT have middle ladies. We had matron and deputy matron and assistant matron.
Now I think of it, there may have been a couple of mouse-like ladies who ran away when any pupils came near. Think they worked during morning lessons and could be spotted at break, scuttling down the corridor.
They never had a title though.

We always had middle ladies in Maine - they do match the description of the 'scuttling' ladies...
