Worth clearing out your internet cache. The "last read" think uses a cookie I think, so might be something going on with that? You'll have to re-login though when you return to the forum for the first time, as it'll lose your login info...

chucking my cookies as suggested by Julian seems to have done the trick, thank you all for your suggestions.

It also could have been due to people stealing things from a major ISP in Canary wharf; seems to have meant that a lot of sites (including some I host for work) have been slow, but still accessible, in rather odd ways.

See http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/11/01/level3_robbery/ for the gory details.

Like this:-

To delete a cookie

In Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
On the General tab, click Settings, and then click View files.
Select the cookie you want to delete, and then, on the File menu, click Delete.
Notes

Some Web sites store your member name and password or other personally identifiable information about you in a cookie; therefore, if you delete a cookie, you may need to re-enter this information the next time you visit the site.
To delete all of the cookies on your computer, click Delete Cookies on the General tab.

Does that help ??
