N.T. (Bogey) Fryer laid it on pretty hard.

R.A. Hewitt, (Deputy Housemaster), was a pussy-cat with the cane though !

The softest hitter was a dear, gentle man called G.H.D. Johnson (nicknamed "b*gger, though I am certain he was not one of those)
he used to pat your bum with the plimpsole and then tell you to go to bed and not tell anyone how little it hurt

An extremely decent chap, a pipe smoker and a rugger fanatic

I'd still like to know exactly WHEN corporal punishment was abolished !

Surely, it must have been after State schools.

I had the luck to be chosen for that duty too!

He'd enjoy spending ages rattling them about while deciding on a heavy thick one or a thin whippy one

It would be hard to justify hitting girls with a stick

Actually now the sexes are equal perhaps not...

Not as far as I know.

When I was teaching in Northern Ghana the boys could be caned the girls, for a similar offence wouls have to dig a hole for a mango tree - this was a four foot cube into the ground and a far worse punishment in my opinion - certainly took far far longer than a thrashing!

Deaconess Ridsdale once whopped me with her bible to refocus my attention on whatever she was attempting to teach us.

Chemmy Thompson used to throw the wooden board rubber at you - with extremely good aim....

The board rubber was for misbehaviour, if you were just drifting off she used chaik, it usually hit between the eyes.

We used to suffer the board eraser too. Some of our teachers were deadly accurate too.
