Any of us educated at Hertford can - at least speaking for my generation and presumably all preceding ones, don't know about the ones that came long afterwards. Many a time I sat in the dayroom with my darning mushroom repairing my lisle stockings - before the nylon ones came in.

The first time my daughter saw me darning her socks, she was horrified/stupified " what are you doing that for, I just throw them away when they have holes..." - terrible profligates, the young...
I can still repair a pair of stockings with a crochet hook ( if I ever wanted to..) !

Having got an A* in my Textiles GCSE from CH I am happy to announce that I can darn socks. Don't have a mushroom though.

I do have some of those curved needles to sew 3D things like teddy bears. Never needed to use them yet.

How do I find out about middle lady employment opportunities?

And if there's a man who can darn socks, can he be one?

I have just solved the mystery. In Col B when I was there, we called them "sewing ladies". You see, if you'd said that, I'd have known exactly what you meant.

For some reason these appear in my deps diary too(!)

Don't think I'd want to be one of those though, sounds boring. Middle lady - much more fun.
