At Hertford in 1940s there seemed to be a large number of girls from London, and from the poorer districts at that. But that was in the good old days of the Scholarship.

I went to Hertford from Lewisham - Embleton Road! My younger brother didn't fancy boarding & wasn't academically inclined, so he went to Catford Boys' School (CatComp.)SAS wrote:There still are! I was also an LCC 11+ person, from Fulham. In that year (1956) there were four of us from our school (Beaufort House, Lillie Road) who were offered places - one turned it down because the family were Jehovah's Witnesses, but three of us started at Hertford, and two of us survived the whole 'course'. Unfortunately the fourth, the only child of elderly parents, was so homesick that she left after only a few weeks. By then it must have been difficult to find her a place in a local grammar school and she ended up having to travel some distance. Within the first term she was killed in a road traffic accident on her way to or from school; tragic for her parents.
