We were involved in some sort of drug trial for strep throat (?penicillin?). Once a day (I think) each house was sent a flat tray of a grey jelly (think snot) which was carved up into 36 pieces. It tasted foul. I doubt if our parents were consulted.

Well done Angela... once I've finished feeding Xander and losing a decent amount of weight, that's on my "to do" list, although at this rate I'll be too old!!

I was awarded a P badge while slouching but was obviously uninspired by this as it was actually taken away from me again!

I can't say that I was very sad about this though.

Technically I agree with you, but I question the qualifications of the people assessing us.

I have bad posture - something to do with always being taller than my contemporaries probably, but didn't get sent to Backs.

I was, however, sent to Feet, and spent many hours throwing bean bags around the gym with my toes. I understood that attendance was intended to improve our flat feet. I did, and still do, have very high arches (can't wear clogs or shoes that cover the arch of my foot unless they are loosely laced) - not a result of feet classes, just genetics.

"Feet" was pointless.

The effort would have been better spent making sure all our shoes fitted well.

I went from 2's to 5's in shoe sizes in less than three years and almost always had shoes that were slightly too small. Like the ancient Chinese practice of foot binding......not good.

I had to go to 'feet' as I had 'flat' feet. No I don't, I have straight metatarsals and have never had a moments trouble with them. Except when I broke one. (about 6 years ago) Then my foot was put in a temporary plaster and when I went back to Fracture clinic after 10 days the doc looked at the x-ray and said was it 'only' two weeks since I had broken it. I said it was 'only' 10 days and he said straight metatarsals always heal better. Also no osteoporosis for me.

AFAIK your 'wingspan' approximates to your height, mine does, and my daughter's certainly does. Makes sense, long legs = long arms.

Is this anything like being able to tell the ultimate size a puppy will become by examining the size of its feet?

I do agree with whoever it was that said basically that 'squizzing' was a good thing, but also with the thought that it was being done by those not necessarily qualified. As I said, I had one leg slightly shorter than the other and therefore had one heel slightly raised, but nobody ever followed up on that, or referred me for any specialist help. OK, it would have improved my posture at the time, although I never qualified for a posture badge, but once I left school I reverted to normal footwear. Many years later I did develop back problems, but I ascribed them to the fact that I had a habit of sitting a toddler on one hip. Today, I definitely need to avoid leaning sideways; I can carry quite heavy weights if I need to, but only if they are evenly balanced; carrying a shoulder bag on one side, even if it is quite light, soon produces backache, so I have switched to using a backpack. So what was the point of noticing the descrepancy in my leg length if nothing lasting was going to be done about it? Fifty years on, it is probably too late!!

Sympathy!

I developed this after a t-bone car accident a couple of years ago - spent forever wandering through the halls and tunnels of the NHS like (Not-so-)Timy Tim swallowing tons of brufen daily to eventually be told that my legs were 2cm different in length and the damage caused by that meant that I needed a hip and probably a knee replacement (My response: "at 48? Think not, luv!"). Kicked off and eventually was referred to local hospital physio department, where a fabulous child said "You've got a mis-aligned pelvis and you're not standing straight." then proceeded to bend me in the most unlikely fashion (and for which skill she could be earning a grand an hour in HK) and lo, legs same length - 6 months of physio to lengthen/strengthen core muscle and job done and back in 4" heels!! She says it was probably result of school satchels followed by document bags and laptop bags tipping slightly to one side for years to balance the weight which had shortened core muscles spine to hip and hip to thigh resulting after accident in one short leg. Which actually wasn't! So me and my Karen Millens are skipping off gaily into the sunset (except for the fact that it's two years since I wore heels and I'm having to learn to walk in them again! Practise, practise practise, so the postman gets some interesting sights these days!!)

I remember at some time during the 3rd form having to go to Backs - and then later in the LIV being awarded a Posture badge...
Given that I had been taking ballet lessons for 6 years prior to CH - and continued to go to occasional classes during the holidays, I was disgusted! You can't work on points with a bad posture - you fall over !

The final insult? When DR told me at 16 that I had an "affected walk" and should correct it - this just after I had won the Daily Mail modelling competition...which involved catwalk work. I duly proceeded to stomp everywhere for the next few weeks and was rewarded by a " that's much better, Barbara, much more natural" from said foolish woman ( I am endeavouring to remain polite here)...

I can SO see DR thinking a masculine stomp is more natural!! She was definitely an odd duck.

Hiya JR

I think that you may have got slightly the wrong impression.

Although DR was somewhat less than feminine in her choice of hair style and dress, she is quite the coquette when she relates her dealings with Sir Harry Vanderpants in 'Half To Remember'.

I still hyperventilate at the fact that she happily recorded being alone with Sir Harry in a room that housed his bed, while imagining her OTT and inappropriate reaction if she had caught any of us in a similar situation.

As I have written elsewhere - she was, to my amazement, human and fallible, just like me
