RIP Louie Angus

Post by Jo »

I've just learned that Louie Angus, who Hertford OBs might remember as the author of "Blue Skirts into Blue Stockings", died in December 2008. She was 101, nearly 102. There'll be an obit in the next issue of The Old Blue.

May she rest in peace. It's a lovely book, beautifully illustrated. I recommend it, particularly to Hertford Old Blues.

Thanks for telling us, Jo.
I must find out if her school mate, Kathleen Stewart-Ffinch (or something like that...) is still alive. We missed a trick when they celebrated their centenary year - I found a photo of both of them at School, in fancy dress but tho. I sent it to John, it never saw the light of day.
I've bought some of Louie's own Hertford stuff on eBay.

I'm interested to know what she'd kept from Hertford, if you are willing to tell us.

Of course. I couldn't think what she'd have been allowed to take away.

When you are next in the CH Museum at Horsham, look for the display case sort of behind the reception/work desk. In it are lots of CH Hertford things which Louie donated - including a doll dressed in uniform, which she made. She was totally CH orientated, throughout her life. As is her friend Kathleen - who lives (if still extant, that is...) in the same C of E Nursing Home as a fellow OB's mother. Kathleen has been a lifelong Governor and in fact her latest pupil must still be there.... Not bad at 101 or 102! They were a feisty lot, the Hertford ladies of the 1920's.....

Kathleen was still alive, aged 102, when Louie's daughter wrote her mother's obituary in February. Louie's daughter, Mary Proctor, was in 3s from 51-58 so I guess Kerren and Midget will have known her. Mary was Kathleen's first presentee.

I don't think I would have known Mary Proctor at school.. if she left in 1958 and I joined in 1957 then from the whole of my first year,as a tiddler in 5's, I am unlikely to have remembered any of the goddesses at the top of the school at that time... But of course in my Old Bluedom years, I knew of Louie Angus and her daughter.....

I have no recollection of a Mary Proctor in 3s. Is it possible that she was in 1s or 5s for her first year?

She must have been in a Junior House/Ward, to start with, Maggie.... because they were not abolished until the 60's. And it looks as if she (Mary) left in 1958 - from 3's.
