The Meads
CH is bottom right in this view. The road Vonny asked about goes straight up between the Dolphin and the station to the Meads "a large site in the Lee Valley between Hertford and Ware ... a group of grassland meadows, grazed by cattle".
Looks rather nice to me, and conveniently close to the school, just a short hop over the back gate. Don't tell me nobody ever went there either!

I thought as much! Can't say I ever noticed the pub though - obviously wasn't interested at that age! Must have walked past it a fair few times! I think Bengeo was the other side of the Meads?
We used to go to the Meads fairly often - on a Saturday afternoon or a Sunday usually.

I remember visiting the little ancient church at Bengeo.
I remember regular walks on the Meads and one winter the river/canal froze and we walked ON the ice... I have photos somewhere... Housemistress was with us... name escapes me, large Canadian woman who was good friends with Mrs G from 3s.

Hmmmm....I am sure you didn't manage to get out of one of DNP's cast parties without having something to drinkmvgrogan wrote:
I don't remember a pub... In those days I wouldn't have known what to do with a pub!!!
In fact I never touched alcohol until the Grecians club at Horsham and even then it was only Babycham
I do recollect sneaking over the back gate once or twice but that was nothing to do with a pub!?!

But perhaps we ought to keep things quiet as your mother is watching
