No, she liked bridge and bird watching - and foreign travel.

Motorbike? Huh?
But oddly enough, now you mention it, JR, I don't think Miss Wilson would have been averse to a ride on a motorbike...
Miss Jukes, no! By Jove, no!

I spent a year in a state comprehensive before CH and quite frankly I thought all the staff were insane . They barely seemed in touch with reality at all.I found it really hard to adjust to the fact that they seemed to do as they liked and no one ever questioned their methods .I was clearly out of step with the school as a bit of an experiment: very working class and a child of my time .I was completely traumatised by being taken out of the 1970s and being put back into a cross between Enid Blyton meets Lord of the Flies.I think I'm still in recovery...

Yes, I can see it too! And former MP Edwina Currie-an older version of Nellie Norman don't you think!?Angela Woodford wrote:This is probably just me, but I've just seen, on the box, the petite size, the bright-and-resolute face and the mannerisms of resigning MP Hazel Blears. She really does remind me of Miss Wilson.
Sorry, but...

Sorry, but...
Therefore, Miss Wilson = Hazel Blears + Motorbike
AND
Nellie Norman = Edwina Currie = a dalliance with John Major ?
It's getting better by the day, which is more than Gordy Brown can say !

I've just picked up this thread and enjoyed it very much. My chief memory of british geography (which I still love, especially OS maps) is....'The fens are drained by three sluggish rivers, the Welland the Nene and the Ouse. I can also remember boring my children very much when on holiday in France by pointing out the 'basket of eggs topography' - though i think that one came from DR......

Well.... I have done the London - Durham student run for the last time (anyone able to offer to offer a job to a well read 23 year old with a Masters in Philosophy....?) and instead of simply chanting "theSwaletheUretheNiddtheWharfetheAiretheCalder" at each bridge on the A1(M) I changed the habit of nearly a lifetime and substituted, yes, "theSwaletheUretheNiddtheWharfetheAiretheCalderTHEDON".Fjgrogan wrote:The version of Yorkshire rivers that I learned definitely included the Don - I wonder if the boundaries moved after my time (1956 - 62)? What I cannot now remember though are the stations on the Trans Siberian Railway, some of which made wonderful substitutes for swear words - Vladivostok, Verkhoyansk.
Also, I have two friends who have just travelled from Moscow to Vladivostok on the Trans Siberian express, posting on Facebook from Oksk, Tomsk and Novosibirsk, and even mentioning Krasnoyarsk. Amazing how present and past sometimes link up.

You realise, of course, that the afore-mentioned Wombles were the forerunners of the current trend before the word 'recycling' became fasionable and global warming took over all our lives.
