Silly question

Post by scariefairy »

When Hertford old blues write things like "Nee Fletcher" after their name, what does it mean? Is it their house or something similar? If so what is the story behind it, if there is one?
One of those things I never thought to ask at Ch and wish I had.
Thanks

It's just their maiden name, i.e. the surname they had at school.

It should have an acute accent over the first e pronounced nay, as it is French for 'born', i.e. name at birth.

What about without the nee?
Examples:
Mary Lynch (McDonagh)
Katharine Dobson (Hills)
Mary Faulkner (Vincett)
Which is the maiden name?

And btw Mary L (M), what is your avatar a picture of?

I'm pretty sure that in every case, certainly in mine, the maiden name is in brackets.

Mine too, and the other Mary's. Women usually put their current name first and their maiden name second,

Mary Faulkner formerly Vincett

Hellooooooooooo

Caroline Payne (née Barrett) here.

Mary Mc's avatar is a photograph of two pairs of feet wearing glasses. Diana Garnham took the photograph while the owners of the feet (and glasses) were enjoying (not) watching a cricket match being played on the Tesco carpark (née Hertford playing field).

On Scottish tombstones one sometimes sees things like

Mary McGregor (Mrs Hamish McSporran).

Incidetally the German chancellor uses neither her maiden name nor her current married name, but the name of her ex-husband, the obscure Mr Merkel. I find this rather weird.

Presumably Chancellor Merkel made her mark in politics while married to her first husband and thought it would be too confusing to change it when she remarried.
