Hi Katherine

Thank you for the message and the later instructions - I am still coming to terms with cybercommunication :-).

I have replied privately.

Hi Mary

My understanding is that you need to plug your turntable into the computer (not sure of the cable requirements), and that the computer needs to be loaded with appropriate software.

We have a couple of electronic chainstores in Australia who were advertising the requirements a couple of years ago, but I haven't seen anything recently. Guess something will be available on ebay ;-).

If all else fails I'll see if it's possible to copy the CD that Sir made from the LP that Mary now has.

Mrs C has given me a suggestion by pm.

I am going to see if I can do it as an MP3 and put it on here.

carols LP

Post by Liz Jay »

Just popped in to say hello and find this LP under discussion.

I have mine still, albeit it is a little scratched and sounds a bit muffled and indistinct in places, but then it has been played at least once most Christmasses.

Of course I know all the words and can warble along tunelessly annoying my offspring! I have to say the soloists were superb, did any of them make a musical name for themselves in later life does anyone know?

and here's the track-list from the "Carols from Christ's Hospital,
Hertford 1967" album:

Side 1
1. O little town of Bethlehem
2. Wassail Carol William Mathias
3. I hear along our Street (Breton)
4. Te Harinui (New Zealand)
5. See amid the winter's snow
6. The Virgin Mary had a baby boy (West Indian)
7. O sleep, thou heav'n born treasure Charles Macpherson
8. This little babe Benjamin Britten
9. Unto us Son is born Piae Cantiones

Side 2
1. Recitative: And there were Shepherds
Chorale: Break forth O beauteous heavenly light J S Bach
2. Jesus, Jesus, rest your head (Appalachian)
3. The three Drovers (Australian)
4. When Jesus lived in Galilee (Native folk-carol)
5. Hark! ethereal strains are winging Tune: Purcell
Words: Robert Millar
6. Good King Wenceslas
7. Hark! the herald-angels sing.

I have this copied onto CD ( not DVD as I might have mistakenly said on another thread.) PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU WOULD LIKE A COPY ANYBODY and I will try to oblige at minimum cost.

It is a truly gorgeous album and I've no idea how Miss Taverner got us to produce such a lovely sound. Some of it is hilarious...like the AUSTRALIAN carol where the three wise men are transformed into three DROVERS!! Shame we didn't sing it with an Aussie accent ! The calypso carol is sung in frightfully posh pidgin english ( too funny). The most beautiful numbers (IMO) are " when Jesus lived in Galilee " and the whole congregation singing " Te Harinui " ( NZ Carol). I hadn't heard it for nearly 35 years until yesterday....I put it on ( having just received the copy from my friend) thinking it might be a bit boring and was blown away by it's loveliness.

There,I reckon I could sell anything !

ENGLISHANGEL , apparently ,if I have understood this thread,Midget sent
a copy of the Benjamin Britten/Carols recording to you.I WOULD SERIOUSLY LOVE a copy of this. Have you ever managed to transfer it to CD or whatever ?

Is there "storage" for music files on this forum does anyone know? because that seems a good idea to post the music files onto the forum and then forum members can down load them....can't they??

Or can anybody LEND me a copy of the 1971 recording and I can ask my friend to copy it and I promise to return it.

Best wishes to all.

A few of us have been discussing the possibility of creating a music archive, containing all recordings known to have been made by pupils at both Hertford and Horsham.

We haven't really got going yet, and such a project will need to involve both the school and possibly the CHA.

Whether such recordings could be made available as downloads, or as finished CDs (or both), we'll have to see. There may be some copyright issues as well, but it would be a valuable addition to the archives, and could even be used to generate a little bit of income for the school.

Hello Richard,

I have edited my above post if you want to re-read it with a little review of said recording.

Yes, I have worried on another thread re. copywrite issues and would appreciate guidance on this matter. I have only transferred my own vinyl copy ( which surfaced when I was sorting out my mother's --who passed away last year....belongings...) onto CD so I could listen to it myself, having no turntable.Unfortunately the vinyl is a bit crackly but the essential
beauty is still there :D

An archive of these recordings is a wonderful idea and these Hertford ones of just us girls are rather different and special even if I say so myself !!

Best wishes to you ,Richard.

Thanks, Alexandra.

It may be that C.H. pupils could be involved in re-mastering some of these recordings (i.e. cleaning up the sound a bit) and producing the artwork for bespoke CDs. I'm not sure to what extent these sort of things are possible with the equipment currently at C.H., but I would imagine that they are possible and I could find out fairly easily.

It would be nice if the archiving could involve some useful educational element as well.

YES PLEASE Alex! Although I still have my LP a CD would be much more useful (as our elderly turntable has been demoted to the garage now!)

I know what you mean about the calypso carol - it always made me smile with the oh-so-correct pronunciation of "De Virgin Mary" - never had a truly West Caribbean ring did it?

Much of it is very beautiful though and the soloists were very talented.

Do you still have my address etc? Of course I will pay whatever - or could exchange for CD from my musician friend (ex-head boy from King's School in Germany) which also comes highly recommended!!

Thanks for offering to do this for us, well done.

Love

That should give the kids enough of a laugh to forgive me for sobbing nostalgically in the corner. They once tried to ban me from watching Last Night of the Proms, because they couldn't cope with me howling through Jerusalem ;-).

Does anyone know if there is a recording of Miss Taverner playing the Vidor Toccata and Fugue? I used to walk out of chapel as slowly as possible when she played that - just loved it.

this is a reply to Alex.

I am going to buy hubby a digital turntable for his birthday, whereby he can plug it into the pc and record some of his hundreds of blackdiscs onto CD to play in the car. so I will be able to do the same for the Britten.

and a reply to Caroline.

Amazing how that Vidor Toccata still sticks in the brain after 30 odd years. Every time I hear it I still see Miss Taverner's hands flying over the keyboards.

I think that was a virtually unanimous request to be played at our leaving service.

I would have had it at my wedding if I hadn't had an organist who could only just manage 'Love divine...'

I had no idea that such a thing existed - should I check out ebay, or are they only available at specialist outlets and horrendous cost?
