What did you think of the Piano Teacher? I read it on holiday a few months ago.

Just read it - quite enjoyed it, although parts of it dragged.

I didn't enjoy White Tiger at all, yet was compelled to read to the end.

Can't put my finger on what I didn't like about it.

The Piano Teacher was good but it did drag a lot, but it was interesting context the story was set in. Im uch preferred the story of Will and Trudy rather than Will and Clare

White Tiger seems to be a book people either loved or hated, I loved it but not sure why-I think it was humerous this man writing a letter detailing his adult life. I also have a thing for african/asian literature as well

I'm currently reading the latest Dan Brown - 'The Lost Symbol'. Its the usual formulaic offering. Frenetic activity which takes place over a short period of time, involving lots of threats and fears, involving the usual 'goodie' (Robert Langdon) an implausible 'baddie' (self tattoo'd from head to foot except for a small area at the centre of his skull, with such high pain intolerance that he even castrates himself......) and masses of heart stopping physical activity such as car chases etc. This time the tale is centred on the USA Masons, not the Catholic Church (well, so far as I can see at the moment). A rollicking and entertaining if not entirely credible read!

The other hand, a book that does not say anything on back page except its a tale of two women and how their stories come together..i read it and found i struggled to put it down but i didnt think it was brilliant

I'm reading 'Half of a Yellow Sun' by an African writer with an impossible name. First on Kate Mosse's list of current reading matter, in the Times last week. It won an Award in 2007 and I picked it up for virtually nothing, in Tescos. It's about the Nigeria/Biafran war 1965-1970. Incredibly well written, and unputdownable... if you know what I mean.

Has anyone else got a local Borders that's closing down? I'm gutted about ours - it's only been here about 3 years but I love it and I've bought quite a lot there in that time. Even though it would have been cheaper to go home and order things on Amazon.

Currently reading Jeremy Paxman 's "The Political Animal" which was lent to me by a friend, and also Zadie Smith's "White Teeth", which is on the back burner until I've finished and returned the Paxman.

I understand that Borders went into Administration a few weeks back. I saw an advert for sale for their furniture etc with a last date of about Dec 23rd.

A great pity - I found them easier to use than Waterstones which, around here, is either small or feels too gloomy.

School bus service cancelled today - all schools closed (except one private). A chance to polish off a re-reading of Carter Dickson's "The Unicorn Murders". An utterly improbable tale, but it contains a good example of a classic device where someone is interrupted before they can communicate vital information. I was due to go to a meeting tonight to work with some others on some creative writing, but the meeting got cancelled due to the weather. So I can finish my reading (in which the characters are isolated by the weatherm as it happens), and don't have to panic about not having finished revising my thriller pastiche based on the set vocabulary. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow...

I've just reread for the umpteenth time "The Daughter of Time" by Josephine Tey, and each time I wonder what Miss Page would have made of it. I can't imagine her approving of anything that challenged the orthodox view of history.

Some snow overnight - more a case of frozen roads. All schools and colleges closed today, again. No buses. No newspapers. Airport closed till 9am. Meetings cancelled - Boss says I can work from home today. He's going in later when it thaws - I'll probably wander in this afternoon. Proofreading this morning, then.
