Bring Back Baker - BBB campaign

Post by Ash »

When Baker left as headmaster, I remember the school being covered in BBB graffiti

We never managed to bring him back.. Which was sad.

Oh well, we tried I guess..

Wasn't he meant to be a bit of a legend?

Well he was quite a good head if memory serves... Far better than the bloke they replaced him with.

If I remember correctly, it was Dr Newsome who was pushed out over a disagreement with the Governors. He went to Wellington where he was, as I understand it, equally successful as HM. He was replaced by Derek Baker who was not universally popular when he started so, if this is the same Baker, then it is nice to know that his popularity grew as he spent more time in post. Personally, I liked him well enough but he was never the 'tour de force' that Newsome was, whether you liked him or not.

Just to confirm what loringa has just said - Dr Newsome was believed to have been pushed (over opposition to co-education?) and Baker wasn't over popular at first; Newsome being a hard act to follow. I think many long-serving staff left early on in the Baker era.

The BBB brought back a completely forgotten memory - one of the the best bits of this section, things you'd never have remembered!
BBB just got scrawled everywhere - bet we could find some if we looked hard enough, to this day!
