Ok, it's online at Soundcloud. I suspect it transcoded on upload, but the original quality was pretty dire (tape portastudios were awful) so I can't imagine it sounds much worse. I've enabled downloads so you should be able to pull your own copy.

I tried to post the lyrics here, but the autocensor on the board was very unhappy with all the obscenity. So instead, I've uploaded them to pastebin.

BE WARNED - THESE ARE HIGHLY OFFENSIVE - PLEASE DO NOT READ IF YOU DISLIKE SWEARING AND PROBABLY LIBELLOUS ABUSE

Sure? Okay, here you go: http://pastebin.com/xaaeV8vw

I'm guessing the lyrics won't make much sense unless you were at school during the '85 to '90 period, but feel free to ask if you want something explained (or anything else).

Regards,

MC Poulton.

I've just read through it.

Irreverant ? Yes.

Hilarious, inventive and clever ? Definitely !

That's hilarious. Most of the 'in' jokes apply in 1986 too - and 'praise the lord for fags and homebrew' to the sound of the school hymn was around in '86 too. There was also a ban on singing 'run then, wherever you may be, we are the drunk and disorderly' in chapel and on the touchline (to the tune of that wretched Lord of the Dance hymn).

In fact 'that wretched Lord of the Dance hymn' would be very suitable in this case, because it was written by an Old Blue, Sydney Carter!

Correction (mea culpa) - it was adapted by Sydney Carter from an old Shaker tune, but it is Carter's adaptation that is the more famous! I once met him when he did a Lenten Lunchtime Lecture at Kingston Parish church - he danced up and down the aisle in a very sprightly fashion - he was over 80 at the time!

Oh I knew that - chiefly because the chaplaincy told us and rolled it out all the time, as well as dire threats if we sang the unofficial version. I've never liked it, but it's not half as godawful as a lot of the new hymns.

I met him too, my Dad was very good at keeping up with old school and college friends. We used to go all over the place to see people.

If anyone cares, the information on Grecians2001 is pretty inaccurate - "Created by a board bunch of Peele A Grecians on the music school computers sometime in 1992". It was actually created in 1990-1991 by a group of five recent old blues (none from Peele A), with the assistance of one deputy grecian who assisted in creating a reference copy of the foundation hymn. I'm pretty sure we posted copies to various known troublemakers who were still at school around Easter 1991.

It was quite amusing hearing the theories (via our undercover dep collaborator) about where it had come from, none of which came particularly close, iirc.

Do you think you'll ever spill the beans? I've always had a particular theory. Strangely I spent a St. Matthew's day with one of the people I thought was behind it, and I don't think I ever thought to ask them.

There's nothing like a good 'Conspiracy Theory' to keep people interested !

I can't imagine that many people would be interested, to be honest! Also, there were a few people who were rather annoyed when it came out (Bob Sillett apparently went on a bit of a witch hunt) and although I can't imagine anyone is still holding a grudge twenty five years on, I don't see any reason to take the risk. Some people have no sense of humour. :)

Having said that, it's not a huge secret; there are quite a few people who know who was involved. I suspect your theory is wrong, as I'm fairly certain I don't know who you are, and I haven't been to a St Matthew's day since I was at school... but feel free to PM me your suspicions, and I'll let you know if they're correct!
