I assure you there were one or two. Arthur Rider for one and Noel "Sam" Sargent for another.
I know I did French, (metaphorically speaking), during my entire time at CH, but for the life of me, I can't remember any of the teachers who attempted to teach it to me. Must have been boring.
John Rutley. Prep B & Coleridge B. 1958-1963.

That'd be Mr Watson (RIP) at Hertford - I was scared sh*tless of him.

Did the girls ever get beatings at Hertford?
I got the almost obligatory cane (on several occasions) but the one teacher I was terrified of was Mr Plumley and his exceedingly painful expertise with a gym shoe!

I don't remember anyone getting caned at Hertford. The punishments they liked to dish out were standing on the dais with your back to everyone else in the dining hall (and stood next to the head mistresses table) or sitting at the back of the chapel next to the school monitors.

for some reason, we seemed to regard getting punished as a badge of honour or status. I bet you are sitting there thinking boys will be boys!

Well to be honest I thought the same when I was at Hertford  By the time we moved to Horsham I was an angel. Well, not quite - I just didn't get caught doing anything naughty  Apart from when Mr Alexander drove past me & another girl walking back from Horsham in the dark. He escorted us back to Barnes and of course informed Miss Lindsay. Got a bit of a telling off for that but apart from that and the one occasion when I had to prove I was sober by walking in a straight line I got away with things.

I bet you were any angel!
I remember a friend and I walking back from Horsham one afternoon, well we were floating back. We had just sampled so local cider! He was asked to walk a line as proof that he was sober and he promptly asked "what line sir?" He failed, what a shock. I didn't have to do the test because I couldn't stop laughing, so I had to spend the night in the infirmary.

There sure was, it was in the room above the main door, I fell out of it once. I was sat on the window sill and I thought it was closed. Oops

Can't say I knew the place well - only stayed there for a couple of nights when we had a visit from Hertford just before we moved. Apart from that I only nipped up there once a term when I was summonsed to be weighed

When I was there, I was always getting Sicker duty which involved sitting at a desk date stamping the sick cards of all those seeing the doctor that morning. Dumb job or what.
