There will be an online version of Petition 1552 launched tomorrow via the excellent work of Michelle Davies. We hope to eventually reach 1552 signatories for Petition 1552 -- and Campaign 1552 on preserving the ethos of Housey will be ongoing. 26% FFPPs is indeed much too high. We seek a formal commitment by the Council of Almoners that there is a new vision and strategy from 2016 to achieve a ceiling of <10% FFPPs within a sensible timescale. This commitment should be built into the terms of reference of the new Head. There are signs that the Treasurer may be starting to understand the great strength of conviction of the world-wide Old Blue community and indeed perhaps the thirteen Almoners will indeed heed this view from both a moral, ethical stance and a pragmatic fund-raising stance on March 17 2016 once they receive a full report on the Middle Temple meeting on March 7 2016. However we need signatories to help convince the thirteen Almoners (including six Old Blues).

(split out off-topic comments again - please keep this on topic, to help support spreading the word about the petition, to allow Old Blues to read and decide whether this is something they wish to support. The off topic posts have their own topic in the same section of the forum.)

Lets hope the figure of 26% is lowered considerably.
With those views, I hope you've also signed it, John.

I have indeed just done so and forwarded the link to a couple of OB friends that I'm still in touch with.

We now have more than 500 signatories. The online petition has made a huge difference, and has attracted a lot of younger Old Blues. We hope that there are links to it in all the CH Facebook groups. We are now hoping for 1552 signatories by the meeting at The Middle Temple, on March 7th, so please keep spreading the word.

For information and in the interests of completeness, since it doesn't seem to have been referred to elsewhere in this thread, this topic was mentioned in the CHOBA February e-newsletter, as follows. The URL for the fuller details on the CHOBA website (under the News section) is http://www.chassociation.org/wp-content ... ucture.pdf.

Changes to CH’s Governance and Management Structure

As part of Christ's Hospital's business planning for September 2017 onward, when our current long-term plan is due to be renewed and the current Head Master is due to retire, a number of changes are planned to ensure that our governance and management structure is fit for purpose. At the heart of the proposals is the desire to create a governance and management structure that enables us to provide the maximum support to our beneficiaries, both present and future, and to fulfil our shared charitable mission more effectively.
Greater clarity and integrated working, together with reduced duplication of function, will be achieved through a new single board and management structure, responsible for managing the School and Foundation, both of which will continue to remain separate charities.
The unique role and ethos of Christ's Hospital will be preserved, and the endowment protected through a series of checks and balances. These include controls over our financial management, spending plans and admissions policy and a strong risk management process.
Details of the proposed changes and an update of the pupil profile, on which a number of Old Blues have recently expressed views, are available on the CHOBA website.

Dear Katharine

Many thanks. Clearly you are very experienced & knowledgeable regarding the Unofficial Forum. This split-off in the Forum from the FFP debate is strange. Male Old Blues somewhat obsessing about canings by certain of the staff. I look upon this as part of the "shared belongingness" of Housey. In a perhaps similar genre female Old Blues commenting variously on the strange mores of Hertford on "boys/sex". FB has kept more closely on topic. As have the 1000+ individual emails from Old Blues world-wide these past many weeks.

This belongingness includes at its heart the shared ethos over the centuries through the family circumstances of the "poor & needy"; the very special dress/uniform of long blue coats and yellow stockings (Old Blues are often seen wearing yellow socks) which set us apart especially in the streets of London for centuries as something recognizably different; the special language and idiosyncracies; the Charge; the excellence of the teaching (Wm Wales FRS teacher of Mathematics was a world-famous navigator and astronomer; Gordon van Praagh PhD was a metallurgist & crystallographer with national standing); the examples of famous Old Blues (Saint Edmund Campion, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Barnes Wallis); the legends and myths (the Spital Sermon; the Deede of Pittie; James Boyer and his cherubims; Henry Flecker and his rages; Clarence Seaman and his psychological reforms); the ceremonies with the Lord Mayor on St Matthew's Day, Speech Day, connection with the Royal Family; the foundation at the time of the Reformation as part of the Protestant movement that created the Anglican Church and the link with the Bishop of London and Anglicanism; the investigation by the Charity Commissioners in the 19thC and the move from the Grey Friars Monastery site; the 1985 merger of Horsham & Hertford; and at the iconic centre, the Chapel & the Band "Beating the Retreat" in the Quadrangle.

This creates the unique sense of lifelong belonging to Housey of all Old Blues based on all this shared experience with at its soul, sui generis, the ETHOS. Hence the potency of this Campaign 1552 movement. For Campaign 1552 is not an organization but a Collective Movement of at this moment some 850 petitioners world-wide who demand that the Council of Almoners hear their cry and ensure that the ancient ethos of Christ's Hospital be newly embraced and endorsed via a Great Existential Debate and the halting of the retreat in the 21stC from the ancient mission and Charitable Ethos.

It has been my happenstance privilege to be, I hope, of service to Christ's Hospital and Chair this Campaign 1552. Our present champions in this cause are our five selected delegates (Professor Keith Bowen FREng, FRS, The Very Reverend Dr John Arnold OBE DD, David Arnold former Headmaster & Almoner, Heather Goodare former Head Girl, Richard Poulton former Head Master of Christ's Hospital) for the meeting at the historic Middle Temple on March 7 2016, next week, with the Treasurer, Clerk/CEO and the appointed City of London Almoner (Guy Perricone, Greg Andrews, Catherine McGuinness). Heather's suggestion of written, shared, statements by the five delegates is a good idea.

This collective, this Campaign 1552 movement must not fail.....

Yours fraternally & with very best wishes
David

David Taplin has asked me to post this for him

Dear Forum Contributors

Campaign 1552 is moving forward strongly and your contributions to this Great Existential Debate & Historic Campaign are greatly appreciated - designed to ensure that the foundation ethos of Housey is fully preserved in the 21stC. We now have 873 online signatories & 108 original signatories making now 981 signatories in total: I am sure we shall reach 1000 signatories altogether by March 17 2016 and the decision-making meeting of the thirteen Council of Almoners. Coupled to the actual 981 signatories on Petition 1552 are the very illuminating letters and comments posted on the online website and sent to the Treasurer/Clerk.

Originally I was to present Petition to the Treasurer and the Clerk/CEO personally and formally at a specially convened meeting on March 7 2016 at Middle Temple. Due to various circumstances and negotiations Petition 1552 will now be presented to the Treasurer Guy Perricone, the Clerk/CEO Greg Andrews and the City of London Almoner Catherine McGuinness at 2.30pm on March 7 2016 at the Treasurer's Office, Middle Temple by a very distinguished team of five chaired by Professor Keith Bowen FRS FREng with The Very Reverend Dr John Arnold OBE DD Donation Governor, Heather Goodare MA former Head Girl, David Arnold MA Donation Governor and former Almoner, Richard Poulton MA former Head Master of Christ's Hospital.

This selected team is working hard to assemble a comprehensive presentation which I think will be absolutely compelling - and in my opinion, logically only answerable by the Treasurer and Council (including six Old Blues) accepting the recommendations of Campaign 1552 on Governance and on the cap of <10% FFP. We shall keep you informed of developments. Clearly we may have recourse to an Appeal to the Royal President of Christ's Hospital and in any event this Campaign will be ongoing to see through this historic petition.

Once again warm appreciations for your contributions.

Fraternally

David Taplin

May I say here what a privilege it has been to work on this petition. I have been the self appointed "Forum Correspondent" for the team. I have delighted in being able to facilitate some signatories and report on posts made. David has been snowed under by the huge correspondence this whole process has involved. It has been a delight to see that the concerns are shared by Old Blues of all generations. Dare I say it, I have also educated some of the Horsham Old Blues about Hertford at times!

The number who have signed the petition, whether in the online form or by emailing their details has now reached more than 1000. By trawling the comments left by some of the online signatories, it is obvious that there is significant disquiet about the current position. While we on the Forum are mainly "of a certain age", many of the signatories are a lot younger. Some of these have experienced being at school with the Full Fee Paying Pupils.

The Petition will be formally presented tomorrow and then taken to a meeting of the Council of Almoners on St Patrick's Day, 17th March. It would be fantastic if we could increase the number of signatories to the symbolic 1552 by then. I know that this will be difficult but if each of you reading this thought about sending the link to any Old Blues you know, who are not on the Forum, we could achieve it! I'm not on Facebook, if those of you on Facebook could spread the word too ....

The meeting seems to have been constructive and there will be a report shortly but the issue is what now happens on March 17 at Council. That will be the proof of the pudding. Campaign 1552 will keep going until its demands are met.
