Classical Music: National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain

From The Sentinel

SOME of the country's finest young brass and percussion musicians are to perform at a concert in Hanley this month.
Members of the 80-strong National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain will be showing off their skills at The Victoria Hall on July 30.

The programme is set to include Elgar's entire Enigma Variations, which has been transcribed for brass, in addition to several shorter pieces.
Philip Biggs, the band's administrator, says: "We are all hugely looking forward to performing in Stoke-on-Trent.
"The band features some of the finest young musicians of their generation.
"With former members of the bands going on to become the who's who of the brass and orchestral world, I would recommend the concert to anyone."
The soloist will be baritone player Katrina Marzella, a former member of the band and winner of the BBC Radio2 Young Musician of the Year Competition.
Professional trumpeter Allan Withington, pictured, one of the world's finest brass band conductors, will be the guest conductor for the evening.
Band members are set to spend the week before the concert on a residential course at Repton School, in Derbyshire, preparing for the big day.
Here the 12 to 18-year-olds will be put through their paces by Allan.
He will be joined by a select band of leading musicians, including cornet players Phillip McCann and Mark Wilkinson, Martin Armstrong on the tenor horn, Chris Stearn on the trombone, Glyn Williams on the euphonium and baritone, Phil Goodwin on the tubas and Mark Landon, who will be looking after the percussion section.
Virtually every brass section in every major symphony orchestra around the world has members who started out with the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain.
All the premier brass bands in this country, including Black Dyke, Brighouse and Rastrick, Foden's, Grimethorpe Colliery and Fairey, have a significant membership of ex-National Youth Brass Band players.
In fact the list reads like a Debretts of the brass band world and is rapidly growing. It includes the likes of Ian Bousfield, Lindsay Shilling, Anthony Parsons, Martin Winter and Martin Hurrill.
Maurice Murphy, the former principal trumpet player of the London Symphony and BBC Philharmonic Orchestras who died in 2010, was the first principal cornet and leader of the National Youth Brass Band in 1952.
The band was founded in 1952 by Dr Denis Wright OBE.
It exists to provide opportunities for young people to play brass band music to the highest standards.
National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, Saturday, July 30, Victoria Hall, Hanley, 7.30pm. Admission is £12 or £10 (£11 or £9 for concessions). Tickets are available by calling 0870 060 6649.
