Damian Scanlan (LaA81-88)

Post by jtaylor »

This received from "Chris Simms":-
H there,
I wonder if you could put up a post to announce that Damian Scanlan (Lamb A 81 – 88) died last Tuesday of cancer. He was only diagnosed three weeks ago, but it was too far advanced for anything to be done. Funeral will probably be first Saturday of April at a cemetery near Hackney – details to follow when I get them from his Mum.
Many thanks,
Chris Simms

Would Chris or anyone else be willing to write an obituary for the next Old Blue? Or at least pass on the text of the funeral oration to use as a basis?

Many thanks

Not sure, but he had a sister (Selena) who was a couple of years below me.

Hi Jo,
I'm writing something for the funeral - if his Mum is OK with it, I'll send it on to you for use in The Blue,
thanks,
Chris

I've now had details from Damian's mum about the funeral: it will be at 2 pm on Saturday 4th April at St Marylebone Crematorium, East End Road, Finchley, N2 0RZ. (Tel 0208 3432232), then on to the Alma, Newington Green Road. (The pub his wife is landlady of.)
His mum is very keen that people from CH come along and asked that anyone attending try and think of a memory of Scan for the book his wife is compiling. Also, please be aware Arsenal are at home that day, so allow plenty of time for getting to the crematorium.
Thanks.

Bl**dy hell! I'm a bit shocked. Just seen this on the CHA newsletter. How awfully sad. I was in the CCF and Damian was heavily involved with that. I remember him marching around looking quite scary and shouting at us all. A lot. His sister Selena was in my year and in my Science classes. Thinking of them all.

Also announced on the CHA newsletter is the death of Joan Newall. Her name won't mean anything to younger folk, and I didn't know her, she left Hertford as a student in 1936 and although staff I didn't know her in that capacity either. But for genrations of female Old Blues she was the ? editor of the CHOGA newsletter and kept us all in touch with each other. (ahh all my generation think, that is where I know her name from.)

Yes, Joan was the walking 'Who's Who' of Old Girls for many years. She always knew who was where at any given time. A lovely lady well known to many generations of Old Girls, particularly Old Sixes as she was a regular at Sixes Teas every year. She will be sadly missed.

I haven't received it this month for some reason. Could you email it to me? My address is on FB or I could pm you with it.
