I would have shouted harder to leave after o'levels.
And also worked harder. I passed the entrance exam with flying colours and also got full marks in my 11 plus, it has been all downhill from there.

englishangel and Euterpe - you're several years after me but still seem to have had some of the same problems. I agree with you, especially the bit about standing up to authority and the A level misfits. I often look back and think why didn't I in a more practical way? Part of the problem is that whoever was at home supported the school no matter what, unlike today, I think.
And if I had only known that there were more boys in heaven and earth than the one who delivered fruit each week . . . and that it wasn't a crime to write letters and send them without having them read first . . .and there were better programmes on the radio than Sunday evening hymn -sing . . . . and more than 6 sweets three times a week would not rot all my teeth . . .and there was such a thing as a phone which some people were allowed to use in the outside world . . .
But knowledge was a dangerous thing it seemed....
