Does anyone know the school latin motto?

Anything that doesn't fit anywhere else, but that's still CH related.

Does anyone know the school latin motto?

Post by na na »

Hello, I was wandering if anyone knows the latin motto because I have a peculiar interview that "what school you went to" is more important than what is on your CV. Furthermore, a translation into english would really be particularly helpful

I agree with Plum, Fear God, Love the Brotherhood, Honour the King and a fourth one - possibly from an epistle but haven't got anything with me to check. We had them over both sided of the two doors to the dining hall at Hertford.

I shouldn't own up to this but it is not a feat of memory, rather I was looking at some photos I took at school and there was the arch.

Next time I will accept the plaudits

The only latin I remember was the school song which I must confess I have totally forgotten now. I know, 1000 lines (not posts before JT has a fit!) on being a forgetful little squirt

well I am disappointed! The last time I heard it was at founders day dinner where we also said the housey grace, but I couldn't remember the motto. Well maybe it wasn't a motto but it was in latin and the OB's definitely were aware of it, but good effort chaps

Fear God, Honour the Queen, Love the Brotherhood (in that order) is the school motto BUT ..... each Block has a house motto over the door, and all, except Peele have it in Latin - eg. Middleton's is Festinae Lente i.e. "make haste slowly". Peele's is quite extraordinary - "Passing Away". Is that because it almost falls off the end of the Avenue, or what?

The school song - the Votum - on this site is ain Latin with a posting to a full translation.

I dont recall singing that at all, I do find myself singing the foundation hymn alot still. Brings back such strong memories of the leavers service, I dont think my dad can sing it anymore without thinking back to that day.

Hertford ladies, the Hertford hymn do you stil remember it?

If you mean the Hertford Hymn its sung at the leavers serivce, very hard to sing when sobbing.

Also hertford ladies we had the tradition on our day of leaving to circle round the statue in quad and sing something but cant think what and was of the understanding it was a Hertfors tradition
