Post by cj »

What are the 'functions' of the guests/hidden users on the forum? Why are they there? Who are they? What does their registration involve etc? Just curious really. Ta muchly. :D

They're just people having a look without logging in, whether they're registered members or not.

Hidden users are those who log in and chose to not reveal their name!

I suspect that there has to be a certain amount of 'guesswork' by the forum software about "Guests", this will be based on seeing someone access the site who has not (yet) logged in some previous amountof time. Also if a member fails to logout, it may well log them out after a period of time, so that continued reading after a period of inactivity my then cause them to appear as a "Guest". We all will appear as a "Guest" after accessing the website but before logging in.

I've been reading as a guest and logged in to post this. I will now log out but may continue reading for a minute or two.

Perhaps others do the same.

I think I just stay on here for ever! As long as the PC is switched on, it seems to automatically log me in even when I am out sailing (I think- though I can't be sure because I am not there and logged in to see if I am logged in etc)

If you are not actually ON the forum, your name does not appear, just because you are connected to the Internet does not mean you are ON the forum.

My login is 'saved' as well so O am never a 'guest'.

As is mine, though I still have to log in...I blame the CH IT department.

Perhaps I ought to write a book called Housey Farm... :goingmad:

Should be a cookie-thing - maybe the CH ICT department clears cookies on clients when you log-out?

Very likely...

Still, it's so oppressive! I expect the only reason this isn't blocked is because of Mark et al. ...

No  - but he holds some sway as a monitor, and since I have noticed now at least 3 members of staff on here, the IT department are bound to know that this is worthy of keeping, even if it does look too fun for us to have!
