Re: St Matthew's Day 1960?
But I think the effect it had on us (although I couldn't have articulated it as such at the time) was to remove every last vestige of personal identity (and dignity, come to that). So it was never just about clothes, it was about who we were, and how the uniform made us feel at a more profound leve...

Re: St Matthew's Day 1960?
I get the impression that the girls' uniforms were always unpopular because they were slightly out-of-date and hence dowdy. Now they're 400 years out-of-date and everyone loves them. (But it is noteworthy that so many posts in the Hertford section -- whatever the subject -- somehow get back to the u...

Re: ThorntonB 1959
I had (almost) forgotten what my brother looked like with hair!!! He was definitely thinning on the top before he was 21 - as were all the dark haired members of my mother's family. Now he has a fringe of grey and that's it! Same could be said about me, actually. Though not being a military man, I ...

ThorntonB 1959
The most famous person in this photo is presumably John Snow, fourth from left, back row.

Re: ThorntonB 1962
Sorry Katharine, I don't know whether David Norgrove had a sister at Hertford. He incidentally is fourth from the right in the middle row, in case you detect any resemblance.
There's another photo coming which does have your brother on it.

Re: clothes and the man
The guy with the guitar was definitely not publicity-shy -- ask JR, who must have known him well. I guess we were all pretty tired -- this was the last day of the March, the pic was taken outside Hyde Park Barracks.

ThorntonB 1962
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll99/275greenford/ThorntonB1962.jpg The Chinese person in the monitors' row is Brian Chao, a visitor from Sarawak under the auspices of Gordon van Praagh, and now (I'm told) one of the richest people in the world. Also on this pic are David Norgrove, future SG, fu...

St Matthew's Day 1960?
My mother took this outside St Sepulchre in Newgate St on St Matthew's Day in (I think) 1960, maybe 61. Anyone recognize herself?

Re: clothes and the man
Actually I thought I looked quite young in the top photo, and the guy with the guitar -- surely you still see people like him around on these occasions? (I'm glad to see the future SG on this photo is wearing a tie.)
But the Grecian -- does he look 17?

Re: weekends
Saturday evening films happened about once every three weeks. We had to pay for them (1s. 6d. a term, I think.) They were unofficially compulsory, because of what people might get up to otherwise. We took our travelling rugs, because Big School was cold. The quality of the projection, and especially...

Re: clothes and the man
Re "Q-shott" (that was how Seaman spelt it), it was kept rather quiet. At some time in the middle of term, the SG passed around a message in the headmaster's handwriting, and we presented ourselves individually in his School Study at break, and took the money (and ran!). (It is possible it...

Re: clothes and the man
Were the buttons awarded at the end of term and then someone had to provide you with a new coat in time to wear on the journey home? Button Grecians were allowed to wear "civvies" on journeys to and from home. When you were awarded buttons, you went to the Wardrobe, where they looked to s...
