Re: End of term

I remember that a fire was lit in the day room on the last night of each Christmas term in Coleridge A during the nineteen forties for the end of term festivities , the only time that this was done in the year. Presumably when the school was constructed in 1902 fires were more used. I wonder when th...

Sergeant- Major Carter

Has anyone memories of the above named known as the Sagger Magger ? He was easily imitated I recall. Was he employed full time ? He worked from the Armoury and was in general charge of Corps activities. He had a fund of reminiscences and stories about his army days. Is the post still in existence ?

Re: Senior Grecians

Some time ago I compiled a list of Senior Grecians from 1902 which I sent to Rex Sweeny for him to cast his eyes over . It was not complete and he offered some corrigenda. I don't recall that it was ever taken any further. I recently moved house and cannot at present find whether I still have a copy...

Re: 'Fudging'

Wearing fudge Bands was a regular practice at one time where it was not pinned into the shirt but merely tucked in so that they could be removed and replaced easily at one's leisure. There was one famous occasion I remember where some boys were dining with the Head Master when a visiting guest asked...

Re: What Keith Douglas got up to at CH

Did not the Grecians photographs concerned go to the Museum ? Perhaps Ken Mansell could help.

Re: What Keith Douglas got up to at CH

First, Second and Third Parting Grecians or as they were I believe originally called Grecians of the First.Second and Third Parting were in effect Grades 1, 2 and 3 to indicate years from departing from the school. Not all Grecians reached Grade 1 by any means. The CH Alphabetical Lists later to bec...

Re: What Keith Douglas got up to at CH

I accept that often the reason for a transfer was to allow a Grecian a study in his new House which he could not have achieved through seniority in his old House. However there were a number of shall we say "less academic" House captains who had the Number 1 Study who could obviously not h...

R. Phillips MA and BB 54-61
G.H. Bostock MA BB 54-62
Strange that they only moved literally next door to their new House. Perhaps this was not therefore a misdemeanour of any sort.

Re: What Keith Douglas got up to at CH

I have looked through some of my collection of C H Club Rolls of Members and found a vast number of Old Blues who transferred between houses during their time at Horsham. How many stories could be told of the why and the wherefore ? I offer a few from various years but the list is pretty extensive. ...

Re: What Keith Douglas got up to at CH

Keith Douglas was at C.H. from 1930-38. He started in Lamb A under Teddy Edwards and transferred to Middleton B in 1936. presumably after his troubles at the Armoury. Over the years a considerable number of boys have been "transported" to other houses for varying reasons . Not all were on ...

Re: What Keith Douglas got up to at CH

There are several copies of the Desmond Graham Biography available on the Amazon website together with a collection of his letters and also a volume of his poems. Is it fair to say that C.H. has never particularly enthused about those Old Blues who never expressed much interest , affection or suppor...

Re: Bicycles at C.H.

There was a famous occasion when the local Police carried out an inspection of all school bicycles presumably to do with a road safety campaign. The Coleridge A House captain, R.N.H. Bulmer mounted his machine to do a test run and the whole thing completely collapsed and the wheels fell off. I don't...
