Re: Hertford Uniforms

Yes, those are the socks! I went back to my junior school to show off my uniform, it must have been either the short October holiday, or possible Christmas 1965. The headmistress looked me up and down, trying desperately to think of something kind to say. "Nice sensible shoes, and sensible sock...

Re: School Needlework

I have just found the bundle of old embroidery transfer designs, and looked through them for the first time. Most of them are heavily creased and would be difficult to use. Some are extremely intricate - views of gardens with trees, paths and borders, all in less than A5 size. You would need tiny st...

Re: If I knew then what I know now...

I thought it was your daughter before reading the later posts - we didn't have such nice wellies in the seventies.

But what exactly is it that you know now?

Re: School Needlework

I have a bundle of those old embroidery transfers, which belonged to my mother, but I don't remember her ever doing any embroidery. Perhaps one day I'll try them out (and perhaps that was a pig flying past the window). I'm not sure how they work - do they wash out afterwards, or do you have to compl...

Re: School Needlework

I enjoy sewing too, though I don't do much now. I used to make clothes for my children when they were small, and various things for myself. I even made (and wore) a linen smock in the 1970's, decorated with drawn thread work. But I don't think I learnt much from SWMNBN. Most of the help I had was fr...

Re: Holly Walsh

I'm sure you're all right about SWMNBN's not having retired by 1972. I wasn't really sure. But might she have had a sabbatical?

I had a plaid cape too - they must have been in fashion. But my mum made mine (and she matched the pattern beautifully on the seams and the hand-slits). I wish I'd kept it.

Re: Holly Walsh

Is it MKM who remembers somebody who did buttonholes in an acryllic thread, and then pressed them with a hot iron on the morning of Handing In Day? I think it was Alex who had the ironing mishap. But perhaps I exaggerated the damage caused. I actually preferred a frantic all night sewing session to...

Re: 'Elf n Safety gorn mad !

Either I'm getting old, or I just left London too long ago, because I still think of the old routemasters as being new - what happened to the RT buses? In Plumstead, the buses struggled to get up the hill with a full load of passengers. On one occasion we had to back down and try again, so the drive...

Re: Old Blues' Day : Who's going?

I won't be at Old Blue's day either, but like the idea of a meeting to remember* the closing of the Hertford school. If that's too far, Angela and I could revive our plan to meet at John Lewis at Cribb's Causeway (near Bristol) for coffee. We could look round the habadashery department and complain ...

Re: Hertford photos from the sixties

Susan Knight (if I'm remembering correctly) was married quite young, to Alan Watts, a social worker. Possibly Susan went into social work too. They lived in Hither Green. I'd love to know what happened to her too.
