Re: Brexit

I'm fed up with Brexit. Brexit, Brexit. I don't even watch the news now. ! GET ON WITH IT !!! You might want to swap the TV for a book and a big bottle of something, because it'll be an annoying part of the UK news and political landscape for at least a decade. A lot of people will be trying to bla...

Re: Brexit

Thank you, but to be honest, it's not something I think would have persuaded anyone at the time, and I certainly don't think it would change anyone's mind now. The referendum was always a deeply emotional vote, rather than a rational one. The Vote Leave campaign understood this, played to it and was...

Re: Brexit

If you don't mind, I'll go through them piece by piece. In general though, none of these have any impact upon me, and the majority have more to do with the UK government and either their own sovereign legislation, or their interpretation of EU rules. More importantly, I still don't see any personal ...

Re: Brexit

Even the most ardent of Brexiteers (except perhaps Mr Farage) have largely agreed that there leaving the EU would cause economic pain, at least in the short term, and I think that most are now agreed that this is going to be both more severe and longer-lasting than they anticipated . I think you're...

Re: English Exceptionalism

I don't follow football but there is a city with two important football clubs, Celtic being one. The supporters of each hate the other team (it seems to be a religious divide) but if you dare deride Ireland they will unite as brothers. Trying to unpick the mess that is Old Firm Fitba, sectarianism,...

Re: Elizabeth Cairncross

I am also confused and angry why there is seemingly no action being taken against P-S-C after their admissions in court. Assuming they even had a legal case to answer for, given the combined and sustained efforts that were needed to get Dobbie, Karim, Husband, Burr, and Webb (I'm sure there were on...

Re: GRACE

But what on earth were non-academic button grecians, whose existence was implied by Mr Ed? Was this some sort of consolation prize, if so for what? They were house captains/school monitors. Depending on your point of view they were either the most upstanding senior pupils capable of maintaining cor...

Re: GRACE

I think it was just Button Grecians while I was there, I don't remember anyone else and I don't know if all of them had to do it either. It might just have been the ones (house captains/monitors?) who sat at the dais for lunch.

Re: GRACE

Unless you were cooking for yourself, or had to bring something back from breakfast/tea for the older kids, the only in-house meals I remember were Sunday breakfasts once (or twice) a year in the junior house where the kitchen dropped off croissants, yogurt, bread, and jam the night before, and occa...

Re: GRACE

I'm impressed anyone can remember that much of them! I fairly sure I couldn't have repeated them while I was there and my only memories of it now are trying not to get caught messing around during, and the occasional time the lunch master(?)/monitor/the one with the gavel, made the Grecian read it a...

Re: Elizabeth Cairncross

I don't think you can use that example to claim that it goes to show things were 'out of control' at the school in the 90s. That story was a couple of years after I left and was the first I'd heard of it (I'd left the country well before it was published), and you're right in that one story alone c...

Re: CH, Degrees and PPE (not the Coronavirus sort)

Interesting. Drama was my main outlet in a tricky couple of years during the end of my time at CH, and I've always seen the theatre and DNP as one (or rather two) of the best things to happen to CH while I was there. Ah yes, I forgot about DNP, an oversight on my part. I do agree with Scrub that CH...

Re: CH, Degrees and PPE (not the Coronavirus sort)

why the school these days has to employ what seem to be dedicated staff in sports, arts, drama, etc. There are multiple reasons why and I think that one of the biggest drivers is to keep up with parental expectations these days. This isn't just a CH-specific thing, but a UK-wide issue. A belief tha...

Re: CH, Degrees and PPE (not the Coronavirus sort)

So what is the general tendency of successful graduates from CH? Has there been a discernible bias in any one discipline? Depends on how you define success. Assuming that means 'have completed a degree', then I don't think there's any noticeable bias. Granted, I haven't kept in contact with that ma...

Re: Mr Redshaw's Rednecks

Whereas in my part of North Wales I didn't see a single Leave poster and the majority vote was Remain - we've had a lot of EU money spent here. A ton of money has been spent in the south too. Last time my folks were there, not long after the referendum, they got into a number of arguments with the ...
