Re: Best names in the media

Of course there's always Old Blue Jamie Coomarasamy http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereporters/jamie_coomarasamy/2006/10/jamie_coomarasamy.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Coomarasamy I always thought of him as "Jamie" even when he was going through the phase of being a professional &q...

La Saint Mathieu 1867

I was in Guernsey for a few days last week - meeting my opposite number for a strategic planning session, and taking in some research in the archives and the newspaper room of the library. So there I was leafing through C19th volumes of La Gazette de Guernesey checking out some references for a fort...

Re: School or place of learning?

I'm in favour of deschooling society, and as someone who has worked in adult education for a number of years I have worked with people for whom "school" is absolutely a negative and with whom one has to desuggest psychological barriers to learning before they feel comfortable in an educati...

Re: Honours List

Of course, if anyone thought deserving recipients were being overlooked, it would be their duty to nominate them through the appropriate process. Instructions for the UK are here: http://www.honours.gov.uk/nominate.aspx However, I don't know where one would have to look for a de-nomination form to t...

Re: CHRISTMAS TIME AND AND ALL IT ENTAILS

Looked cold in Jerrais land, Geraint. And where are you? Well wrapped up and safely the other side of the camera. OK, here's a Christmas recipe. We sang Prans du housse ("Deck the halls") while we were out carolling that evening, and since that carol includes mention of chaûdé (cider fl...

Shakespeare, Henry IV part 1: "I would I were a weaver; I could sing psalms or any thing. A plague of all cowards, I say still."

Re: CHRISTMAS TIME AND AND ALL IT ENTAILS

I am now stocked up on garlic (smoked and unsmoked) for the next few months thanks to the Marchi Nouormand. Business at the Christmas market has been slow - partly due to the smaller number of stalls than usual as not all the traders managed to get across with the weather. The weather of course hasn...

Re: CHRISTMAS TIME AND AND ALL IT ENTAILS

Went carol singing in Jèrriais in Town yesterday evening (late night shopping). Managed to avoid the showers - just a few spots started coming down just as we were doing our last carol on the programme " J'vos souhaitons un jouaiyeux Noué (We wish you a merry Christmas) ". We had a good ...

Re: House Singing Competition?

I remember having taken part in singing "You can go but be back soon" (from "Oliver!) and "I like to be in America" (from "West Side Story" - not many boys could resist "amending" the line "Knobs on the doors" in rehearsals, as one might imagine...

Re: EXIT CH -- EXEUNT TRADITIONS !

On the subject of vanished traditions: I was sorting through some papers at the weekend and came across a copy of the fabled Christ's Hospital Nasal Drill (undated; issued by GE Friend, Medical Officer). An extract: All boys fall in by their bed, standing at ease, without Coats, Waistcoats, and Band...
