Re: Please - Help from a Latin Scholar?

Psalm 150 in the Vulgate springs to mind: "laudate eum in cordis et organo "

BCP: "praise him upon the strings and pipe"
KJV: "praise him with stringed instruments and organs"

Re: I can understand

Getting back to the questionnaire... I lost the will to cooperate when I looked at the Employment Sector section. Listing "The Arts" under T didn't inspire confidence and one would assume that design would fall under that category, although "Author/Writer" and "Music" d...

Re: Gruesome Encounter of the Newsome Kind

I may as well add some Newsome memories. One of the initially scary things about him (apart from the reputation for wielding the "Grolli rods") was the way he knew your name. It turned out that he sat down with the mugshots of all the squits before the start of the year and memorised every...

Re: LE

I am sure we weren't the last year to have a fast stream. The earliest Blue Book I've still got on my bookshelves is 1978-1979, and the Form List has Grecians, Deputy Grecians, Great Erasmus, Upper Fourth, Little Erasmus, Third Form, and Second Form. Total boys in GE = 107 Total boys in UF = 134 To...

Re: LE

My impression (from the latter 70s - LE 79-80) was that the LF was long gone - perhaps around the time of the split into Junior and Senior Houses?

I think it most probable that she was née Smith and went by surname only. I remember the call that went from one end of the Art School to the other: "Smith!"

Re: Latin is a language

Hard at work* today proofreading my latest book (with special last-minute attention to apostrophes - down with the blighters I say!), and it so happens that I had to do some (rough) translation of Latin sources to get this one together. (Book launch has slipped slightly - but should be out by Christ...

Re: Book about the history of CH?

Christ's Hospital Four Hundred Years Old. Published by Christ's Hospital 1953 and I can say that I found this one to be best of all although only 82 pages. That's one I've been meaning to pick up one of these days. One book I really regret not buying when I had the chance is the book on the CH Bran...

Re: Book about the history of CH?

The 1953 book is excellent in its way, but is basically an assembly of anecdotes and short essays placed in chronological order. It only claims to be a "literary celebration" and a "historical anthology" - not a history. As stated in the acknowledgments: "The Editorial Comm...
