60 year reunion.

I am considering attending the 1955 re-union. However I shall travel by train from Northumberland and will need an hotel overnight. I would appreciate a recommendation of a suitable venue for the Saturday night stay. Many thanks.

Re: Congratulations To Joe Launchbury

Did J.A.Bailey captain the cricket team? Was he not President of the MCC? Other Captains in sports were D.R.W Silk Cambridge and Somerset. Also Rugby Blue. ? Dingle President of the CUBC. Is netball classified as a main sport?

Sir George's Residential Home for Respectable Girls 1886

A relative has recently moved to an apartment in this block which is in Spitalfields. The history and address is available within local press coverage. However I was trying to find a Housey connection because of the address and charitable status. Was Spitalfields a significant area for orphanages suc...

Re: Rev W Cochrane. (Corks!)and Jazz

I remember Steve Race giving a lecture on"Jazz" sometime in the early 50s. We had heard of him but only on the wireless! Certain monitors were allowed to stay up late to listen to classical concerts. I thought that I would try the same stunt one night with JHP. He refused on the usual grou...

Re: Rev W Cochrane. (Corks!)

With ref to the Musical Wasteland. I agree. My sheet music-Sid Phillips parts ,and Boogie piano disappeared when I placed them in those music lockers in the Music School. However don't forget the Housey Hotshots who played at least once in the annual fixture against St Catherine's, Bramley. I think ...

Rev W Cochrane. (Corks!)

I have been watching the black and white BBC Coverage of Churchill's funeral. When the "Head of State" procession entered the Cathedral it was headed,I am sure, by Corks looking splendid in full clerical regalia. Has anyone else recognized him? JHGS

Jo was a swimmer from Col Bin the mid 1950's. We both toured Yugoslavia with CUSC. He was a scholar of Peterhouse. Father was a senior policeman in the Met. Not seen him for nearly 60 years. Would like to speak again. Thanks JHGS

A most interesting and informative obituary in the Telegraph this morning. He was a great sportsman but I would have wished for more on his career as a schoolmaster.. I thought he was most effective as a housemaster-I enjoyed seven years in Th.b with him .

We should not forget Mike Peary. Not only a distinguished sailor but also a fine scrum half and President of the RFU.

Re: CH and the Armed Services

I think that John Coggins,Mid B c 1955, moved from the merchant navy (he went from CH to the Merchant Navy training college at Southampto]thence to the RN and became the Commander of one of the diving support vessels. Some 20 years ago his ship moored at Newcastle and there was an open day which,sad...

Re: Memorable Sermons

I remember Colonel O Heck. I thought his name most apt! In addition the mention of Bishop Bell reminds me of the time he preached a sermon which included "the valley of dry BONES".His voice must have ascended a further two octaves. Most comic.

Was she not an Australian? Certainly I could not imagine Sister Cook behaving like that! However in one of my long Sicker sojourns of which there were many one of the junior trainee nurses was persuaded to smuggle in brown ale from Horsham.

Re: Roy Edwin Terry

Well this Pop/Jazz ban has shattered some of my fond illusions. I look back on my time at CH as having been spent in a moderately liberal environment. How was it policed? What were the parameters? I mean lots of serious 20th Century music was profoundly influenced by jazz, from Debussy & Ravel ...
