Re: DAMBUSTERS AND C.H.

As for the Pub Quiz question the following comment by Katherine reinforces a suspicion that I have concerning the nakedness of Mercury. Is that the reason for the difference? “As to your pub quiz question, are girls nowadays still protected from such obscene (!) sights? Are the current plates identi...

Boys’ favourite books (& their pages) in the CH Library

So many things at CH have changed since the 50s and 60s. I recollect a few books in the Library were very much read (or more precisely specific pages consulted, in situ ). They were opened very often at one particular page. So on looking at the unopened book one could see relevant page(s) from dirt ...

Re: Scholarships to CH -- and beyond

The West Gifts scholarships were for pupils from Reading, Newbury (about a dozen boys from each town) and a few from Twickenham. They were the bequest of John West and his wife Frances. Any of their relations who applied for West’s scholarships were given preference over other candidates. One such w...

Re: CH, Assisted Boarders and the TES

I believe the FF % has been reduced from 26% to about 20%. But, apart from future planned percentages, there are other crucial questions.

Have sufficient donations arrived to cover the resulting increase in costs, are some economies underway, and/or is there a current increased running deficit?

Re: Michael Cherniavsky

Whatever the Canadian practice, elsewhere there have been university teachers of science without a PhD, but very few. One such was Mr Carl Collie a senior lecturer at Oxford who retired in 1971. (He spent two years in the University of Peshawar, Pakistan, where we was called a visiting professor, bu...

Keep up the good work. You're a great advert for a CH (male) education.

Bingo! Congratulations eucsgmrc. Perhaps you too were taught by The Oil, or more likely you are simply bright.

Re: Threads being moved

The circumflex has been dealt with well. Now what about the same sign ( ^ ) when it is placed under the line of letters, meaning that something written above the line must be inserted? What is this sign called and why? (I learned this from The Oil in a Latin class, so I suppose there is some vague r...

A recent book (partly) about CH

I have discovered a biography published last month of an “unknown” OB, LH Gray (1905-65). It contains 4 chaps with plenty about CH, Horsham in the 1920s (out of 14 chaps). The book is expensive (£53), so it seems better to ask your local library to get it, rather than buy it, if you’re interested. S...

Re: Memorable Sermons

Apart from any intrinsic humour in the story of the Valley of the Dry Bones, I suspect that the reason for the general hilarity, whether it was read in evening House Duty or in Chapel, was the fact that in the early 1950s there was an African-American pop song (using today’s parlance), Dem Dry Bones...

Re: The Art School

In response to Angela - While at school I recollect a portrait of Nell Todd, by Benedict. It was superb, just like his other work I saw in the Art School. Whether he still paints females, or not, I don’t know.

Re: What Keith Douglas got up to at CH

They certainly did, for I presume there was some sort of absolute standard which if attained (whether for entry to Oxbridge or somewhere else) resulted in the awarding of buttons. Frequent examples of this were for those going to the London Medical Schools. Some, not going on to Universities, were a...

Re: What Keith Douglas got up to at CH

I have been trying to get access to the School Monitor pictures for some time, without success. Some are picturesque (eg the nineteenth century ones in which some School Monitors have moustaches of varying sizes and shapes). At least now I know who to blame for their disappearance – Seaman!

Re: What Keith Douglas got up to at CH

From my recollections (a few years after Kit Bartlett’s time at CH) the two highest forms at CH Horsham were Deputy Grecians (“deps”) and Grecians (“grecs”). The latter came in 4 different types – Probationary Grecians, First, Second and Third Parting Grecians. - Normal progression was one year as a...

I'm pretty sure that Tabor ended his CH career as house captain of Mid A.
