Re: RESEARCH
On further reflection I believe that the classroom blocks were blacked out and this did enable lessons to take place after the 4.30 p.m. tea break. This would have enabled games to take place as normal in the afternoon. The Dining Hall windows were definitely not blacked out but those in the Chapel ...

Re: RESEARCH
I am querying the timetable for lessons in 1951-52. Surely the 12.15 p.m. break took place on all days of the week as it was a time to play sports. This was certainly the case up to the late nineteen forties. It had not been possible to black out all the classroom blocks so during the mid winters of...

Re: RESEARCH
Have just checked my Blue Book Alphabetical lists. It was J.R. Haynes and he left before 1944, perhaps he was called up.
Has anyone a full list of those masters who served in either world war ?

Re: RESEARCH
The Victory 1946 Holiday was celebrated by the whole school being given a long week end home holiday from Friday to Monday. A few boys who were unable to go home, possibly parents or Guardians not available , one never asked questions about anyone's private home circumstances. There is an interestin...

A visit from the President, only two in my time in 1942 and 1947' usually resulted in the granting of an extra half holiday , Does anyone recall much about the late Prince Henry, Duke of. Gloucester ? Apparently he had very little conversation and was a poor public speaker. Peter Kendall, senior Gre...

Re: Official lists at CH Horsham
The museum has copies of the Blue Book Lists from c 1931 onwards. I believe that they started way back before then. They were published originally in September but switched to February in 1943 or 1944. The House Rolls as they were called came out at the beginning of the school year in September. Aga...

Re: "Endeavour"
I recall that the rumour about bromide being put into the tea was going the rounds during the early days of my National service in 1949.

John Michael Laurence Bell Prep A & Coleridge A 41-47
I am looking for any information on the above named. He was an estate agent in Zimbabwe but came back to England following the troubles there and had three children. I believe that he suffered financially through the Mugabwe regime. He attended a Coleridge reunion once where I met him and was then l...

Re: Oh dear..here we go again.
As a matter of interest is there a published figure anywhere of how many pupils' parents are in fact paying the full £30,000 per annum fees ?

Re: Oh dear..here we go again.
Should not someone, preferably from the school, have corrected the mistaken impression given that fees are all £30,000 per annum ?

There was an interesting reference in the above episode transmitted on Sunday to the word " Kiff ". The character Detective Inspector Thursday, played incidentally by Roger Allam ( Peele B and Thornton A 1964-72 ) said it was what smoking pot was referred to in the desert in World War 2. H...

Live in maids at Hertford were mentioned by Katherine in a recent comment. We certainly had maids in the Preparatory School at Horsham in the early nineteen forties. Does anyone recall if they "lived in " as they seemed to be on duty for a fair period of the day ? They must have had separa...

Re: Who's Blue?
What is really needed is a twentieth century edition of Ken Mansell's excellent book on Victorian Old Blues entitled "Who was Blue". 1902 to date. It would only be able to include deceased Old Blues as I know there are 100 year Data Protection issues involved. Any volunteers out there or s...

Two more aphorisms from Kit Aitken. Advice to Old Blues when visiting the school, based no doubt on past happenings. "Never introduce your fiancee or girl friend by her christian name " "Don't smoke in the Day room" , When Old Blues used to offer to contribute to House Funds he w...

Re: Poor disciplinary C.H. staff
On the subject of Kit Aitken, twenty years Coleridge A Senior Housemaster 1946-66 there should perhaps be a separate thread. My late brother Nick Bartlett ,CA 45-53 wrote a tribute to him in The Blue after his death in May 1974. Kit had a vast store of sayings and aphorisms some of which were handed...
