Re: Book about the history of CH?
Looking in Amazon, there are one or two books I've never heard of... Part of the phenomenon of print-on-demand. Now that many out-of-copyright books in libraries have been digitised and made available for download, there's a mini-industry in marketing these as books for sale, then printing off thes...

Re: Chris Nicholson and other favourite masters...
Bomber Nick - utterly inspirational. Now that it happens that I write poetry sometimes on a professional as well as personal basis, I'm occasionally asked how I started (and why). The answer of course is that I got into the habit under Bomber Nick and nobody told me to stop (although there are proba...

Re: Book about the history of CH?
The Christ's Hospital Book, published 1953, is a historical anthology (and has a CH bibliography at the back). 426pp - and nearly all of them fascinating. You can track down a reasonably-priced copy via http://www.abebooks.co.uk (e.g.http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=809084755&sea...

Re: THE LONG, LONG REACH OF C.H.
Corks was succeeded as Director of Music by a man called John F. Rust, who was not universally popular (to put it mildly) aka the screaming skull - he subsequently came to Jersey for the sake of, so the story had it, his health. Here he found himself teaching music to, amongst others, a teeny-tiny ...

Re: The Forthcoming General Election
In the States do you have compulsory voting a la Suisse or Proportional Representation (which I read into your post) or first-past-the-post? Multi-member constituencies. Senatorial voting is for six candidates per election, so voters have six Islandwide votes; first six past the post. For Deputoria...

Re: The Forthcoming General Election
When people ask why I insist on continuing to stand for election to the legislature (despite my historic inability to persuade more than 30% of the electorate to consider voting for me...), I reply that it's one way of ensuring that I've got someone to vote for (however that does mean that I don't g...

Re: Current reading matter
I have just enjoyed The Sittaford Mystery , next is Why didn't they ask Evans ? Haven't read either of those for a-a-a-ges, but from what I remember they're good, solid early Christie. Say what you like about the old girl, but when she was at the top of her form, no-one's fresher, and no-one's fair...

Re: Current reading matter
found myself giggling at Catherine's description of reading 'Hairy Potter' by torchlight under the bedclothes, and being frightened when her husband's feet twitched. I haven't yet watched the DVD of the 'Half Blood Prince' though I treated myself to it, for Christmas. I've just acquired a not-quite...

Re: Current reading matter
I've been working my way through a stack of Dr Thorndyke mysteries by Austin Freeman. I'd read the short stories years ago, but I think I'd only ever read one of the novels. Since they've come back into print, I splurged on a set of as-new 2nd hand copies. I think the mysteries work better in the sh...

Re: Current reading matter
Did you have them at Horsham I remember reading Punch regularly - or rather looking at the cartoons, but I don't remember if there were bound volumes. Here anyway is Evoe's parody of Kipling's "Sussex" as though translated into French and back again (complete with fake translator's footno...

Re: Current reading matter
The 1919 has some lovely Cartoons of generals being evicted from the War Office !! If 1919 Punch has any poems by Evoe (E.V. Knox), they're always worth a look. I was given a surplus copy at CH of one of Evoe's collections of parodies from the School library, and have built up my Evoe collection si...

Re: Current reading matter
You mean it's snowing in Jersey, as well.....??? Some snow overnight - more a case of frozen roads. All schools and colleges closed today, again. No buses. No newspapers. Airport closed till 9am. Meetings cancelled - Boss says I can work from home today. He's going in later when it thaws - I'll pro...

Re: Current reading matter
School bus service cancelled today - all schools closed (except one private). A chance to polish off a re-reading of Carter Dickson's "The Unicorn Murders". An utterly improbable tale, but it contains a good example of a classic device where someone is interrupted before they can communica...
