Re: Re-educated by Lucy Kellaway
Most of my teaching was overseas. When we had a London posting in the 80s I wanted to teach in the State sector, but my CV didn’t fit, they couldn’t place me, couldn’t work out where I fitted. This meant I ended up teaching in an independent school, later when we retired and came here permanently I ...

Re: Richard Trenchard (PeB 1978-1984)
Yes I’d read that, before I knew he was an OB. I hope he’s allowed to work there and is able to achieve something. I meant it sincerely, Good Luck to him. We were in Islamabad from 74 to early 78, it was a time of peace in Afghanistan, our diplomat friends would go to Kabul on R&R, and bring bac...

Richard Trenchard (PeB 1978-1984)
From today's CHOBA newsletter, Good luck to him is all I can say Richard Trenchard (PeB 1978-1984) Richard has been recently appointed the Representative (Country Director) for Afghanistan for the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) based in Kabul, Afghanistan. This follows...

Re: Old Blue Summer Visit 2021
I see I’m going to have to visit the Museum. David, I do know that a male OB has been immersed in Hertford history, and have helped where I can. I’d be interested in seeing the scrapbooks you mention, what time span do they cover? I’m sorry if I sounded bitter this morning, unlike earlier years, I o...

Re: Old Blue Summer Visit 2021
Welcome to the Forum Andrew, and condolences on your Mum’s death. Thank you for your very interesting post, you, of course, like the majority of Old Blues, have a school to return to. As a Hertford Old Blue I don’t, Yes my father, my brother and for a short time my niece were at Horsham I wasn’t. Ca...

Re: 1950s HANDHELD CALCULATOR
Two real advantages of a slide rule were that you had to make a rough estimate to decide where the decimal point was, and also you couldn’t get an answer with apparently six significant figures from a starting point with two or three sig figs. Yes I’ve still got mine, correction both of mine. I had ...

Re: 1950s HANDHELD CALCULATOR
It sounds something like a development of an abacus, but I can’t say any more than that. If you have ever seen someone using an abacus skilfully it is surprising how quickly they can do it, and, of course, get the right answer. Even more surprising is seeing someone make the same movements without ...

Thanks for that, Rob. I find your post very worrying, trite to say such things shouldn’t happen, but how on earth does the country ensure they don’t happen?

Re: A history essay topic at CH in 1956
I thought that by emptying the monasteries it removed those who had had the caring roles in society, those who had looked after the sick, the children and the insane. It was that lack of care that was noticed.

Re: A history essay topic at CH in 1956
Very interesting, as someone who doesn’t understand Horsham year names, how old would you have been in Upper Fourth?
Definitely an idea to ponder, had the monasteries not gone, there wouldn’t have been CH. so working back from that … I agree with much that losing a writes.
