But were there lesbians in industrial boots in that era?

Re: Happy Birthday JR
I seem to remember that John was finding things a bit of a struggle in recent months. Perhaps his wife or family might like to give the site a call and update us. All good wishes anyway John.

Freaky returns to Sussex (by the sea)
After much pressure from family who seem to think I may be about to keel over and need looking after, I've cashed in my chips and moved nearby, opting for a rather decent retirement complex in Saltdean, five miles east of Brighton. The vibe here is lovely. Everyone's friendly and relaxed. It's a bit...

Re: Punishment system
When people were expelled they were immediately spirited away to spend their last day and night in the sicker. I've always imagined that this was to prevent them returning to their houses and thinking that they might as well be hanged for a sheep as a lamb and causing mayhem.

Re: Punishment system
Ha!ha! I've often wondered what would happen if someone was asked to leave and then said: "No, I'm not leaving thanks very much. B*llocks to the lot of you. You can effing well leave if you want!" When I was there beatings were common, for often minor infringements. Some housemaster seemed...

Re: Freaky in the FT
Today I get lead letter in the Guardian. About the modern phenomenon of the Tory party roundly insulting the electorate (Lee Anderson and the 30p meal). Generally it used not to happen in the post WW2 years because you don't really want to be slagging off the people you hope will vote for you, but a...

Re: How Much Kit Brought Down From Newgate Street Still Exists?
I never knew that Kit was around in the days of Newgate Street. He was obviously much older than we thought. What did he bring? Well Banker Brown for a start, plus all sorts of other exotica. His wooden leg, Corks, Elvis Carter and his pop records. Maybe Col A veterans of my era have other items to ...

Re: Freaky in the FT
And again! Another of my letters goes into the FT - this weekend's edition. And guess what? It's about, wait for it, public schools! Rishi (several miles up my own backside) Sunak and his noble £100,000 gift for bursaries to Winchester College. But there's a paywall on the FT and I'm afraid you'll h...

Re: Re-educated by Lucy Kellaway
That is just so sad that you were orphaned while at CH. I seem to remember that you've spoken about it before and that the school thought that by not talking about it too much you wouldn't be reminded of it. I was contemporary with you and remember the Fantle affair and wondered how he coped with it...

Re: Re-educated by Lucy Kellaway
One of the things that surprised me about Lucy Kellaway's schools was the attempts to teach economics to 14 and 15-year-olds in what appear to have been challenging classes. And not just very broad, simplified principles at that. GDP, the Demand Curve, Exchange rates and whether the founder of Bet 3...

Re: Telegraph article: Pupils at prestigious public school will receive lessons in 'white privilege'
Lucy Kellaway's book Re-Educated is well worth reading but she also crops up on videos on You Tube on the subject of corporate bullsh*t. And this is entertaining too. She spent much of her time on the FT writing a column featuring a fictional CEO called Martin Lukes who posted pompous, overblown, co...

Re: Telegraph article: Pupils at prestigious public school will receive lessons in 'white privilege'
Lucy Kellaway has some experiences to relate in her book Re-educated. Teaching in a multi-ethnic school in Hackney she inadvertently speaks of something attempting to be whiter than white. "There was an intake of breath. The old-fashioned phrase which had seemed so innocuous as it formed in my ...

Sorry about repeating my post. I noticed a typo in it, re-edited it, and it came up again in revised form. Me and computer technology still have a lot to learn.

For all those who are fascinated by the flush of talented CH products in the 1950s who went on to Oxbridge and greater things, you might be interested in Alan Bennett's musings in his book 'Untold Stories'. "That there were schoolmasters who were larger than life, whose pupils considered thems...
