Re: teaching relevance in later life

In retrospect how did CH teaching help you in later life? Christ's Hospital was excellent preparation for my chosen career though it wasn't one that Ratty James the careers master wanted me to go in to particularly. Despite making a horlicks of my maths A Level (Grade D :-() my A Levels were good e...

He was a Justice of the Peace. https://www.wycliffe.co.uk/the-wycliffian-society/obituaries/richard-poulton/ https://www.chforum.info/php/viewforum.php?f=42 Interesting - my daughter has just finished at Wycliffe (cue outrage from Mr Redshaw though he has been very quiet of late) and, though not wi...

Re: Flecker’s Banning of some Comics

I just caught up with this thread, eighteen months late. In my day at CH (1970s), small-format British war comics and American-style comic-books were still referred to as trash mags by the boys, which leaves me wondering when and why the term first came into use at the school. As some will know, al...

David - I think you are probably referring to this: viewtopic.php?t=731 which originated with a post from eloisec back in 2005 which I think could be read as cri de coeur. I suspect she moved on to better things - I hope so!

Re: David Newsome

I can't believe that Wellington was a "promotion". What caused him to leave CH ? Was he, as a somewhat old-fashioned headmaster-don, and a professing Christian, just out of touch with educational developments in the 1970s ? I think Wellington would have been seen as a promotion, however, ...

Re: Midwich Cuckoos - episode 3 - is this a Housey Girl or Boy?

Indeed it is, from Ware in Hertfordshire but probably a boy from when the younger pupils were educated outside London. You can see the picture in full here: https://artuk.org/discover/artworks/blue-coat-child-301083 and you can read the plaque if you scroll left and right. If you Google 'bluecoat sc...

Re: Punishment system

It seems that as things got worse and worse in terms of pastoral care, bullying and general fairness and decency during the 80s and 90s as widely reported elsewhere on this forum, the punishment system became more and more complicated. In the 70s we broadly had: Drill - running around the loop by th...

Re: Bursary question please

I think you need to ask the school directly: https://www.christs-hospital.org.uk/contact-us/. I would suggest a phone call backed up by an e-mail so you have a record. Also, I would find out what they mean by employment in terms of hours worked if that indeed is a requirement.

Re: Freaky in the FT

Off topic I know but ... As for one's interactions with those who supported Brexit and those who voted to remain, it is becoming increasingly difficult to identify the former group as they have gone so very quiet (including on this forum)! Within my (extended) family, as far as I know it was only a ...

Re: Re-educated by Lucy Kellaway

As for the CCF and guns, did you not get to fire Brens on automatic fire on the range? Put on the clip (30 rounds was it - some army wallah can maybe put me right) and blast away. Imagining one of your least favourite master's head as the target. We also fired .303 rifles but they had a bit of a ki...

Re: Twins

I clearly missed the original post but Richard was not only alive and well but, at least in 2019, running the Hereford and Gloucester OBs. I remember him well from the Scouts when John Shippen tasked him with teaching me meteorology (unsuccessfully). I knew he had a twin but John as I was in a diffe...

Re: CH Scouts

This subject has been moribund for over a decade but I thought I'd seek to resurrect it to see if anyone can advise what happened to the CH Scout Group. There is no mention of it on the extra-curricular activities page of the CH official website and the Scout Headquarters looked very much as if it h...

Re: Films at CH, 1956-1960

If someone wants to compile all the titles of films shown at CH Horsham in those days, I believe they were listed on the school Calendar. This was a small piece of printed cardboard, which also mentioned all the sporting and Debating Society fixtures, names of visiting preachers, meetings of the 19...
