Thank you, Caroline and Katharine. I intend to have a great day, whatever happens! Dentist appointment at 10.0 - only a check-up, so nothing to dread. Then visiting a florist to organise flowers for a beloved friend's funeral - she died last Thursday at the age of 49 - the florist is also an old fri...

An unsent letter

Now - here's a curiosity: a letter from me that I didn't send for some reason. Perhaps it will remind some of you of the embarrassment of having little "admirers"? As I was an assistant Mon. to 5's and took netball and swimming with both 1's and 5's I had more than my fair share of these a...

I've just returned from my travels (Moldova, since you ask) and plucked out the next letter - another from S.A.W. I'm glad to say! Nothing special - just a general ramble about this and that. "J.M.B. There is not much prep of any importance to be attended to so I will write a nice long letter, ...

A quick one from S.A.W. before I disappear for a few days. End of Spring term 1960 is looming. "J.M.B. Sorry I haven't written earlier but I have been in a tearing hurry ever since 6.10 this morning. The aura of gloom round my school needlework has lightened a little but I'm still going to be i...

Whoops - my mistake (wake up at the back!): there are 90 hereditaries left in total (out of 735) of which 75 are/were elected by their peers.

Music exams and coffee evenings

I'm beginning to think it would have been a good idea to get these letters into some sort of order first! As it is, I've been picking them out at random so this one from Margaret precedes one I posted earlier with her music exam results. I think M. was Ward Mon. for 5's at the time, hence her refere...

I think back with nostalgia - the House Record Player - stacking it up with singles. It's hessian trim side, it's raspy bumpy sound, the "tone" switch which made no difference. It had a stylus somewhat similar to a small knitting needle, but this only added to the effect. Wild nights! Bed...

Re: Inheriting a Title

A friend of mine has always said that he could well inherit a Royal Title and that if they didn't change the rules, he and his Malaysian wife could sit in the House of Lords. It made me wonder what others would do? He might have a long wait to sit in the House of Lords: there are only 15 hereditary...

On the theme of how many from the same family, there were three Pratts in Maine A when I started: Graham (the Housecaptain), Robin and Martin. I seem to remember being told that there was an older brother too. Maybe they had sisters? Yes - they did, at least one. Angela P. was one of my closest fri...

Oh all right then! Here's another - a very rare letter from Elizabeth Onley, violin virtuoso and champion cricket-ball chucker. She had just been up to London for an interview at the Royal College of Music. We were in each other's company a lot of the time so letters were normally unnecessary. This ...

Is anyone still reading this stuff? Or should I stop? Very brief one today, a note from Margaret Wells: "Please will you come with me to the cookery school at 9 p.m. to put the casseroles in the oven and set the time switch. Bear these figures in mind in case I forget the book: Cooking time 1 h...

This very long letter, from A.M.W.P., repeats the Sports Day news already reported by R.Y., tells of the hard practice for the Singing Comp (more of that will be revealed in a different letter), building up to the Poetry Comp (ugh!). It also reveals our total idolisation of P.H.S. (the poor woman, I...
