Elusive young OB cricketers

Just wanted to draw attention to Carl Robinson's new thread in the Old Blue clubs / societies section, trying to locate more than seventy ex-CH cricketers:

Skinner's Feast

On 'Skinner's Feast' I'm less sure of my ground. But the Skinners' Company used to hold (probably still does) a big event on Corpus Christi Day each year, involving a procession to the church of St Mary Aldermary. Traditionally this procession was led by the ten current CH pupils presented by the co...

Serve the hole, Mrs Flowers

<b>Mrs Flowers</b> ran the Tuck Shop. <b>Hector Buck (Col A 10-19, Horsham Staff 28-57)</b> defined 'the hole' as 'an aperture about 18" inches square in the wire-net grill separating server and customers… A not very orderly queue succeeded to it, inserting arm, coin in hand.' 'Serve the hole...

Alastair Mackerras

and was there not another chap named Mackerras Yes - this was <b>Alastair Mackerras (Staff 52-53)</b>, later head of Sydney Grammar School. Didn't know about the Sir Charles connection though. Apparently he (Alastair) wrote an autobiography including his years at CH (<b>Paddie Drake</b> mentioned a...

Re: PULLIN/WHITFIELD

Is this Rev Whitfield (Whitfeld) in the 1951 Barnes B photograph that I posted to the CH Photos section? Yes, Whitfeld was assistant housemaster of Barnes B, succeeding another Australian, <b>Frank McCracken (Staff 48-50)</b>. Mike Brittain …says it was Lionel Fredrick Whitfield... then he added ...

Ron Pullin & Lloyd Whitfeld

I am surprised at the heading which is "Chaplain 1959-64" as I remember him well and feel that he was there for most, if not all, of my time at Housie, which was 1948-55. Is my memory wrong or are the dates at the head of the obituary incorrect? As I understand it, Ron Pullin was Chaplain...

Exton's dates

The house and dates of Exton/Brooks have normally been given as Mid B 1941-45, but in Who's Blue 1997 he gave his date of arrival as 1940. I'd be surprised if Sylvia Miller at CH couldn't tell you which version is accurate.

No, she died in 1998.

Yes...there are some very distinguished people who were at CH Hertford. However, until Ida Busbridge (Hertford 1919-26) died relatively recently, they were all extant - and with that exception still are living (as far as I know). Don't forget about Margaret Gowing (Elliott, 4's 1932-38) , historian...

The Eponymi

One or two corrections needed here: The Middleton block takes its name not from the Jacobean dramatist but from Thomas Fanshaw Middleton (CH 1779-88, Governor) , first Bishop of Calcutta. Details here: http://chi.gospelcom.net/DAILYF/2003/01/daily-01-28-2003.shtml Perversely, Barnes is named after t...

Bullying and abuse

Welcome back, and as I said on the original version of this thread, in the junior houses at the start of the Seventies there were quite a few boys who'd have fitted in just fine at Abu Ghraib.
