Re: Here's a hypothetical
Agree with most of what David says. I’d also add that I was never “sent away” - I was given the choice of CH, or alternatively Whitgift or Trinity scholarships. Or, the very high quality local church state school, Archbishop Tenison’s. Having seen them all, I chose CH without hesitation, partly BECA...

Re: Here's a hypothetical
I teach GCSE maths to students from local state schools - the kids can be bright, but the single biggest thing missing?? Aspiration! If nothing else, at least in my time, CH applauded achievement, in whatever field it was that you chose. You didn’t get bullied for being clever (at least from what I ...

Re: Here's a hypothetical
I would agree that the approach to alcohol at CH in my time seemed to work fairly well... The generally accepted approach seemed to be that if you could hold a coherent, no-slurred conversation with a housemaster then they'd usually ignore it. But if you threw-up, were rowdy, violent, noticeably dru...

Re: Sheila and Peter Higgins - character references for Gary Dobbie
Either all staff were 100% aware of what was going on back in the day.... or, it’s possible for staff to believe everything’s fine (and now, that it’s all changed), but there still to be problems in an organisation. I’d suggest it’s extremely risky to suggest there’s 100% no problems, it’s 100% chan...

Re: Sheila and Peter Higgins - character references for Gary Dobbie
I may be naive, but I think there’s much more general awareness on the part of the kids themselves over what’s right, wrong, normal and inappropriate - along with a much stronger ethos to trust the child by default. So I’d like the think it’s be better - but who knows..... I do hope so. I suspect th...

Re: Dobbie sentencing hearing
Agree - my feelings for the place have definitely changed in the last couple of years, and it’s triggered much introspection over what happened to me and my friends in my time there. Seeing all the happy pics of Old Blues’ Day felt very dissonant- I felt like shouting “don’t you realise what was goi...

Re: Dobbie sentencing hearing
Unbelievable if he only spends 6 years inside for this, less I guess given time-served. To think he could be out-and-about again in a couple of years time is horrible.

Re: Trial of Gary William Dobbie
Is this another example of covering things up for the reputation of the school (in this case Shrewsbury) - and can't be deemed to be "historical" - it was only 2016! So it's still common-place for institutions to try to hide/not reveal revelations about their staff? Seems very economical w...

FYI, oddly, in PHPBB forums, messages sit in the Outbox until they’re read by the recipient - then show in Sent Items.
