Re: The Morning After

( I know, no news is good news...). Hopefully she will make contact soon :D I gave my son a stamped addressed envelope, and we got a letter today (probably the first and last letter!) Ah, back in the day we all had to sit down every Sunday morning after Chapel and write home. The content was typica...

Re: Old Blue stars in Madonna's new film

Still - We all know the American won the 2nd World War. Apparently, we weren't involved at all, according to them in most of their films on the subject ! Wrong - it was John Wayne who won WWII almost singlehanded with Steve McQueen and Charles Bronson and Clint Eastwood having walk-on parts. Think ...

Re: Should I change my browser?

After you have been using your computer for some time, files get fragmented when stored on your Hard Disc. I would suggest, clicking 'START' . then open 'ACCESSORIES' , then open 'SYSTEM TOOLS' , then open 'DISC FRAGMENTER' , and follow the instructions on the drop down menu. It might take some tim...

Re: sock ties and other miscellaneous queries

Is there evidence that the ‘new’ system is better for the students? Certainly in the 50s the first few days were tough, but I don’t remember separation being a major longterm issue. If anything the two? half day visits each term made things worse. I suppose there must be a tipping point, where...

Re: Books studied in English

'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner' was one of our set texts for Olevel, always loved this long poem. I could never understand this title given the definition: Rime: A white or milky and opaque granular deposit of ice formed by the rapid freezing of super-cooled water drops as they impinge upon an ex...

Re: Current reading matter

Stone's Fall by Iain Pears is a good read: if you read his first book (An Instance of the Fingerpost) you may get a slight deja vu.

Re: New blog on Christ's Hospital

While the sample size is small, I am surprised by the apparent trend. It seems that under the old, pre-Seaman 19th Century model, bullying was relatively rare: under the more enlighten 70s-on regime, it has become more prevalent. I don't know if there have been published studies on this (not just at...

Re: MP3 players - advice needed please!

The iPod Shuffle has a 2GB capacity. If you need more, then the Nano comes in 8 and 16 GB versions. All can handle music, as well as podcasts and audiobooks.

Re: New blog on Christ's Hospital

Pretty depressing: what time period were you there? It might be interesting to poll this forum to see if bullying has increased, decreased, or stayed the same over the last 50-60 years. My time was late 50s and I don't remember any systemic bullying of individuals, though there was a lot of low-leve...

"Alcohol.... available at Horsham, not available at Hertford!"

My God: in my day I am not sure whether alcohol or girls were the most sought after! To have both available would have been beyond our wildest imagination.

Re: Hertford to Horsham

I apologize for apparently re-opening a sore topic. I was more interested in the reaction to moving to Horsham: what did you really miss, and what did you find to be a positive change?

Hertford to Horsham

This has probably been done to death: I just haven't noticed it. The Hertford experience must have been very different that Horsham in many respects. For those who were in the transition: what struck you most forcefully (both good and bad)?

Gentlemen vs Players

Our local PGA event is being lead by a 19 year old amateur, who broke the course record. This got me to thinking about the Gentlemen vs Players matches when I was young. Are there still competitive amateur players in any of the major sports in the UK?
