Re: CH Letter re support for abuse survivors
The letter is even handed, but staid. My feeling is that there is real nervousness about liability here. If the school ever goes close to admitting that there was organisational incompetence in the period of interest, then this needn’t be just about sexual abuse. There were some awful cases of bully...

Re: Why does Eton make headlines....?
My view, for what it is worth, is that Eton is not singled out per se but stands out because certain of its alumni are, and have been, prominent, not always positively, in the public eye and any jibes are directed at the alumni as much as the School itself. It might be the silly uniform? Oh, wait...

Re: Letter to Head Master
I think the time has come to start making things difficult for the school. They may find engagement preferable to the administrative burden of having to juggle complex freedom of information requests, or requests to be forgotten under GDPR. There are plenty of ways of tying an organisation like CH u...

Re: Poulton, Cairncross, Sillett
What it omitted is less likely to be Googled Well, let’s help google along a bit. Elizabeth Cairncross allegedly negligent deputy head of Christ’s Hospital School during mass child abuse scandal of 1980s and 1990s and former head of Wells Cathedral School, now on board of Governors of Salisbury Cat...

Re: Poulton, Cairncross, Sillett
Folks, I am new on the forum but have read some threads with interest having been at CH from 77-82 and specifically in Barnes B where Peter Webb was one of my house tutors and Roger Martin was at the time the Housemaster of Barnes A across the hall. I note on the forum many references to Elizabeth ...

Re: Roger Martin - trial
I cannot speak for TMF but as far as ' The Charge' is concerned, age old words. Meaningless words. Paradoxically perhaps the inherent assumption that is the Charge puts people off? Not half as bad as ‘ Royal, Religious and Ancient ’ though. None of that helped protect young and defenceless people, ...

Re: Is private education overrated?
I know our situation was not typical but there are a lot of families in our position working overseas. Independent boarding schools are still important for people like us. I agree with that - particularly if local provision is poor. In the case of some children, it's expensive for the taxpayer thou...

Re: Bishop Peter Ball
Well, either he’s discovered God in the afterlife, in which case he’s hopefully getting a proper kicking, or he’s discovered there’s no God, in which case he spent his life on a hiding to nothing.

Re: Here's a hypothetical
Think it was 'fairly' standard for similar boarding schools at the time. A key point was that you were not 'buying' alcohol in the Club. You exchanged money for chits somewhere else and I think possibly this could not happen while the club was open. You then exchanged the chits for the drink. The c...
