Re: The Blue

Have you forgotten the Obesity Corner feature in every issue? Naming and shaming, with a picture of Billy Bunter?

O, the humiliation.

Re: The Blue

And you had to buy it. With actual money. Which was why I only ever owned one copy of it. I was habitually boracic. After you left the school, you were sent it free for a year, presumably in a bid to keep you onside and make you want to be a governor one day. I remember it mainly for it for the fact...

Re: Freemasons and questions to answer

Well, as a Town Clerk during his post-CH career, Husband would certainly have associated with plenty of councillors/local businessmen who were Masons, no doubt about that. But perhaps his involvement with the Rotary Club was something he embraced on the grounds that the Rotarians, like the Oddfellow...

Re: What was the attraction?

On the other side of the coin, I remember one bachelor master who, during the holidays, had only two options: stay on in his study and bedroom at the school or go back to his hometown and live with his mother. Not much of a life, really. Whether he eventually put aside a lump sum and bought a house,...

Re: Freemasons and questions to answer

I'd be very surprised indeed if Husband turned out to be on the square . I remember him as a man who could be pretty scathing about anything at all 'establishment' and that included fogeyishness, stuffiness, pretentiousness and elitism of all types. The Andrew Husband I recall would've considered so...

Re: NEW DRUM

So very true, John. In fact I was thinking of bunking off for the next three months and returning when the ambience was a little bit less funereal. I'm sure nobody'd miss me. Maybe a long break in Mablethorpe?

Re: Transcripts

I respected Basil Gregory a lot. He had standards and didn't tolerate sloppiness. He ran a very tight ship, which looked kind of weird from the outside but which definitely got results. Personally I'm glad I wasn't in Maine A, being neither a Spick nor a Spanner myself, but I respect what BSG did wi...

Re: Transcripts

This probably goes without saying, but in a way it also comes as a shock to think that Burr was only in his twenties when all of this was going on. One wonders whether he interfered with his fellow pupils when he himself was at school just a few years earlier, then carried the habit over to CH as hi...

Re: Transcripts

I must say I think it's just not on that the transcript of Burr's appeal identifies the victims by both their firstname and surname initials. What kind of anonymity is that, when anyone with an old Blue Book or anyone who was in Maine A at the time could identify them with relative ease? Surely bett...

Re: James Andrew Husband, Pickering Town Council

Possibly it's worth mentioning here that Pickering was the town where Husband grew up. So there must be quite a few townsfolk who remember him as a wee ginger-haired nipper running around in short trousers and who are now trying to square that memory with this summer's unpleasantness. Even I have to...
