Housey (the adjective) was used in my day to cover a number of CH specific items, certainly coats, but also blankets, stew, buttons, etc. Although I have not discussed the topic with him, I notice from Jonathan that the term is now used almost exclusively to cover coats. Moreover, the adjective has...

I'll come in as a female, speaking ONLY for myself, a married woman of age 58. While I accept some of the conventions over initials that existed in the past, I would like an envelope to be addressed to me as either Mrs K M Dobson or as Katharine Dobson. I do NOT like Mrs Katharine Dobson, even less...

Re: What happened when the girls arrived?

How did the transition from CH being an all boys school to being mixed go? I presume the same number of boys applied as in previous years, so a far greater proportion must have been turned down in the first year. Why is the intake not 50/50? I believe the proportion is roughly two thirds boys. Is i...

Re: How did your family learn of CH?

You might find replies limited as we did a similar thread recently. http://www.chforum.info/php/viewtopic.php?t=936 Thanks for pointing me in that direction. I did a quick trawl when I joined but missed that one. I still like my father's story and hope it was worth posting. Your father's story is v...

Re: How did your family learn of CH?

I am a second generation Blue. There is a wonderful family story of the way my father and aunt both got to the school, I hope it is true!! My grandfather was a missionary in the Bahmas during the First World War and soon after that he returned to be a vicar in the East End of London. The children, ...

Re: The Grecians' Houses

How about Snow, for Jon Snow the cricketer, or Davis for Sir Colin Davis the conductor? I know there is a Barnes? but what about Wallis? Blunden and Douglas perhaps as other blocks are named after literary figures. They were both at Horsham too so it would be good to choose names from the Horsham e...

Re: The Grecians' Houses

Don't ypou think that the Grecians' houses should have been named something more interesting than 'Grecians West' and 'Grecians East'? Surely there must be some more Old Blues who have been famous or noteworthy? How about Snow, for Jon Snow the cricketer, or Davis for Sir Colin Davis the conductor?...

Recalcitrant (candidate for word of day thread?) posters who fail to notify the forum of their movements should be punished by being compelled to run the steeplechase course in gym shoes!

That'll bring 'em into line :D

From the CH Official Website. "Other activities include Badminton, Volleyball, Judo, Aerobics, Weight training, Cross-country , Trampolining and many others." So! Who has responsibility for it? Why cannot the school reach a national level of competition? Cross country running seems ideall...

Is/was the Steeplechase an official school event or some kind of initiation for the benefit of the seiors? It was an inter house cross country race(s) (junior, intermediate, senior) held annually in the Lent Term. Mr Tall may well be referring to training for the event which those that aspired to w...

The Steeplechase

Do they still do it?

Did anybody (other than the winners) actually enjoy it?

I remember slipping and sliding going up that blooming hilly field (Sharpenhurst?) leading to Itchingfield Churchyard. Guess you felt a sense of achievement at getting round though.

Oh, so I am not the only one who has been curious about him - despite the nasty comments I have had from one or two people who seem to think I am being censorious, ignorant, petty etc etc. And can you tell me/us(and there are others who would like to know) what his answer was to your inquiry? Perha...

CME Seaman and AP Waller (maths teacher) are two other Old Blue teachers from my time. Dr Hoskin's predecessor, Dr Scott, was also an Old Blue. Regarding where pupils come / came fro...

Re: Where exactly did this term originate from?

The 'Brew Room', that is present in a few houses - where did this term come from? Kiff - what is kiff, and where did the name come from? A quote from Christ's Hospital by G.A.T. Allan Revised by J E Morpurgo published 1984: "....`kiff`, a nauseating concoction of tea, coffee or cocoa pre-mixed...
